Girls -with some leisure are finding the binding of bocks a charming occupation. It is an eighteenth century fashion revived this winter. Cloth is used and tapestry and satin. One often uses small bits left over from furniture upholstery. The covers are made of pasteboard, with cloth covering them like a pillow case and the back put on separate-ly.

Sometimes ribbons are used across the back, laced through tiny silk, rings. These make charming Christmas present. MARRIED. GRANT-RENTON On Wednesday. November at 6:30 p.

The use of slang among crooks Is general, and the expert thief, hurglar and "strong arm" man who is not facile in the idiom of his profession Is not in good standing.

Siang is. In fact, the hailing sign and password of the craft; without It the community of rascaldom couldn't get on at all. It would be reasonable to suppose that a man who practices a business whos success depends upon lis secrecy would avoid in all possible ways such conversation and habits as might be distinctive and calculated to attract attention, but the obvious value of such a rule is disregarded by crooks as applied to their intercourse with each other at least, and it frequently happens that by the use of their peculiar speech they reveal themselves to the astute detectives and "make a fall." Nevertheless, the average thief would scorn to speak of a watch when the proprieties of his literature required him to say a "kettle," or to say pocket-book when the niceties of the professional speech demanded the use of the word "leather." Philologists have traced the origin of thieves' slang to the gypsies, and many words in use by the thieves are derived from the Siingari. as "pal," "kinchin." "bloke," etc. But the restless spirit of American life refuses to bo crystalized in a permanent vocabulary, and thieves' slang, like that prevailing in every-day speech, is fluid and changeable, receiving additions continually and dropping out words that have become common and familiar.

For example, "super," watch: "slang," chain, became so well known some years ago that they formed the subject of a popular song called "When Terence First Joined the Gang." The fraternity of thieves dropped both "super" and "slang" at once, and now lc is a "kettle" and a "string." "a pot." "a front." "a tick tack." "a dial," and so on, but always something new. It has been observed that the English thieves' slang has factors of permanency. Jack Sheppard called Blue Skin a "bleeding swine," and this form of contemptuous reference still continues among Eng lish crooks, who are nut regarded as having much originality or initiative in their craft or in their speech. in Do Foe's "Colonel Jack" we meet the thieves whose persistent objurgation is "blind me." and the cockney thief today for en-phasis still says "bloind me'." Mr. Leland (Hans Breitmann), who made the study of the Zlngarl his business for years, noted the fact that their speech though corrupted as they wandered among different peoples still retained its sonority and appositeness of sound and meaning, and thieves' slang, which Is largely drawn from the Romany, while it fails to retain tho vocal values, still keeps a distinct relation between sound and significance.

"A strong-arm" man now serving a IO years' sentence in Sing Sing recently made a contribution to the fundamental literature of slang by compiling a dictionary of words and phrases in actual use by thieves. It contained altogether 1.750 words, which is about the numerical vocabulary of the average person. Practically it Is a list of substantives, and indirectly it illustrates the theory of the foundation of language by which the nouns preceded the verbs. Slang has not successfully attacked the verb as yet; when it does it is obvious that a new language will have been created, and as Ibe crooks have both ingentiitv ti (1 nphn in tfmA thpv will give us an entirely new language. I The following is a selection from th dictionary of the "strong-arm" man.

It furnishes a curious study for the philologist and will prove of interest to the general reader as showing the source of many words which secure adoption Into everyday speech. New York Press. Tlaaalana Trnit In Fate. A few years ago I was taking a country walk in Kovno. The road lay through a dense forest and the day was oppressively hot. I arrived, at last, at a crossroad, and sat down under the shade of tho converging roads.

On one side of them was inscribed "14 versts to Janova," on the other "17 versts to Shadowa." Presently the creaking of wheels and the slow "clop, clop" of a horse's hoofs on the road behind roused me. A cart piled high with tinware was coming down the road, with the driver perched on tho top of the load. "Good day, brother." I called out, as the cart with its sorry horse came abreast of me. The man returned my salute, and the horse, glad of any excuse to rest his weary legs, came to a standstill in the middle of the road. "Which way are you going?" I asked.

"To Janova. There is a market there tomorrow." "But there is also a market in Shs-down," I answered, "and It Is a more Important place than Janova." "So it Is: so it is," the driver replied with perfect indifference. "What have you for sale?" "Plenty of good tinware, as you can see, brother. I have worked for fix weeks to make this cartload." "Well, good luck to you and your tinware," I said, pulling and eating the berries within reach. "Will you take it to Janova or Shadowoa?" The man picked up the bit of rord which served as reins, and prepared to go on.

"I shall leave that to my horse," he answered, callously. The lumbering wagon moved off and finally passed nut of '''sight down the Janova road, which the horse had elected to take. St. James' Gazette. Leather Colored Stationery.

Careful women always remain loyal to plait white glazed note paper, but there are thousands who do not see th wisdom of this. To them the fashionable paper Is the new leather color, the French call It plain brule-burnt bread. This Is used with the house address at top in Gull brown or black. The envelopes are ob- 1 long, and the surface smooth and glossy. It cannot last long, but while It does It 3 will be immensely popul r.
