President Herrmann will remember the players when he receives his share of the gate receipts during th Cincinnati-Cleveland series. Such liberality should be appreciated by the players. It should make them put forth their best efforts for the club at all times, now that they realize that the club's interests are their own interests.

In Dan Kerwin and Charley Ar-mond the Cincinnati club has picked up two cracking good ballplayers. Kerwin, because of his greater experience, will be a valuable man to the team next season, and at the rate De Ar- mond is improving- with every game he should be as good a youngster as there is in the league next season. Jimmie Collins did not have much to say about the coming contests, but there was about him a quiet air of confidence, which meant much.

The Bostons are not unknown here, although as a team thy have never before played in this city. Some of them most of them, in fact are old National LeaRue stars, and as such were well-known and popular with the local enthusiasts. Cy Younjr. for instance, has a larsre circle of friends here, as have Collins, Dineen, Huphes and several others. The Boston btinch looked to he in just as good shape as are th Pirates.

and their friends loudly declared that they were here to see Collins men win fRE FIGHTERS hagging awav to the finish If a team which opposes them lets up in the least then the situation immediately becomes dangerous, for they never relax their efforts to win. We had to work for the victories we got in Beantown. and we will have to do the same thing for those we win here. "Ieever. I am afraid, will be unable to take part In any of the games.

His arm is In very had shape, and although everv-thing possible has been done for it, it refuses to come right. This is a bad handicap, but it has taken none of the confidence out of the rest of the bovs. In fact, it has made them more eager to win. They are anxious now to show the Bostons that, no matter how badly we are crippled, we can still take their measure. "The other men are all in tine shape, and will put up some great sport here.

They played the finest ball of their careers in Boston, and are just as pood this week as they were last We have been forced to show the kind of ball we cm play. Pairing the National league season we were forced to our limit But the test we have undergone, and will continue to undergo this week, has been a good thing for us. as It has proved that we are always in the game, and that we are able to play the fastest and best ball in the world. "It Is only right to remark about the tre-ttment we received in Boston. The people there are the best In the world.

We had everything we wanted, and the crowd was never radically against 'us. It is a pleasure to play ball under such conditions, and it is to be hoped that the ppcple of Pittsburg will give the Collins boys just such a reception as was accorded us bv thir friends." and he Is there at present, according to news dispatches. A couple of years ago Miller was with wht re he is rated as one 0f the best pitchers in fast company. But be did no good with New York. This does not mean, however, that he would be valueless to Pittsburg.

It is only necessary to recall the case of Southpaw Kddie Doheny. Kddie was no good whatever in the eastern metropolis. He seldom won a game. The people were against him. and he did no efficient work.

But Harry Biilliam got hold cf him and brought him to the Smoky City, -where list year he was one of the team's best dependables. and would have hern equally as effective this season had be taken the proper care of himself. But Kddie had too many friends. Miller Is a steady man. who never allows his convivial spirits to get ihe best of him.

October 5. Tom Corcoran is one of the members of the Red team who has not yet made up his mind to sign for next season. Corcoran is a bit dubious about accepting- a cut in salary. Corcoran received this season, and as the contract was entered Into during; war times, he was -worth the money. But conditions have changed.

Corcoran can not expect to receive as much money next season as he did this season. Corcoran played for $2,400 during- the Brush regime, when that amount was the salary limit, and while the local club does not expect him to receive so largre a cut. It does not expect to sign him at the same figure he received this year. When it comes to making contracts Corcoran is one of the wisest ballplayers in the business. He seldom or never makes a mistake in this respect.

It would seem that a player who is entitled to one of the biggest salaries in the business should be an expert at every angle of the game, and Corcoran is not. for he lacks the ability to hit expected of a really great ballplayer. The local club's treatment of its players has not only been fair, hut liberal in the extreme.
