http:www.stlnet.com ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 1998 B5 Pair admit kidnapping newborn from mother's hospital room Proposed Confluence Greenway The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Kan. A man and woman accused of taking a newborn from a hospital shortly after her birth pleaded guilty to charges in U.S. District Court on Monday, the day before they were to go on trial. Buddy L.

Hall, 30, and Amanda Tull, 18, both of Sheridan, entered the pleas before Judge Kath-ryn H. Vratil. Tull pleaded guilty to kidnapping, and Hall to being an accessory to the crime, U.S. Attorney Jackie Williams said. They were charged with taking Carlie Shockey from her mother's hospital room at the University of Kansas Medical Center on Jan.

28, less than eight hours after she was born. The mother, Trish Shockey, 19, was asleep. The infant was recovered unharmed about 23 hours later when Hall and Tull arrived at a home at High Ridge, south of St. Louis. FBI agents were waiting for them after being alerted by a relative that they were headed there.

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 24. Tull faces up to life in federal prison without parole, while Hall could get a maximum sentence of 15 years without parole. The baby was taken from the hospital about 11:15 p.m., with the kidnappers apparently walking out the front door minutes ahead of hospital security officers. Hospital officials credited a housekeeper, who apparently overheard one of the suspects boasting that she now had a baby, with sparking the search for Car-lie.

Security cameras recorded Tull and Hall at the hospital, as well as another hospital in North Kansas City, earlier in the day. The videotapes were played on televi sion news programs, and authorities quickly identified the suspects. After taking the baby, Tull and Hall went back to Sheridan, where they stopped at a tavern and showed off the child as their own. People were suspicious because Tull had been claiming for four years that she was pregnant, but had never given birth. The suspicions prompted a call to the Worth County Sheriffs Department, which alerted the FBI.

After a cicada egg hatches, the larva falls to the earth and burrows underground, munching on tree roots for the next 13 to 17 years. After emerging, the adults sing, drink, mate and die, all in a matter of three weeks to a month.

They don't even take time to eat "They don't chew," Trager said, "but they do have little soda straw mouth parts that pierce the soft growth of trees to drink sap." The females also will cut into new tree or shrub limbs to lay their eggs, but Trager said the injury to the trees is rarely lethal and is "approximately equivalent to a bad pruning job." On the other hand, the emergence of the cicadas is a feeding bonanza for wildlife. Birds, squirrels and deer are known to savor cicadas, and Trager noted that insects also are part of the human diet in some cultures. 'I'm not an entomophage," he said of insect gourmands. "I guess they're sort of like pumpkin seeds. You put them in the oven and stir once or twice." KADERA, LORRAINE (nee Amenn) Sunday.

That's why residents have complained of giant swarms of the insects in their trees, making a roar reminiscent of a 727 taking off. Despite the complaints, Trager urges a minimal response to the perceived problem.

Spraying is not an environmentally acceptable control. Instead, he encourages an appreciation of this quirk of nature. "They're completely unable to harm humans, unless one flies in your eye at 40 mph," he said. "I noticed one of the TV stations was saying they're ugly and scary. 'People just look at this fairly large black insect with red eyes, and there's a visceral reaction.

But if you separate yourself from this sense of siege, the variety of sounds they make is like a whole chorus of tropical insects. I think ifs fascinating. Trager also explained why certain areas of a city reverberate with the sound of cicadas, while there's hardly a whisper in others. They're known for being distributed in a kind of spotty pattern," he said. "In the St Louis area, it relates to whether that area was open, tall-grass prairie or forested.

They need trees to breed.
