He was 84 and lived in Creve Coeur. For a number of years, Mr. Kaut had battled amyotrophic lateral scle- rosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease an illness that attacks motor cells in the spinal cord. Before serving in the Army Air Forces in World War Mr. Kaut owned a shoe plant in Ironton, Mo.

After the war, Mr. Kaut was an owner of the Kaut, Lauman and Winter a shoe manufacturer in Dixon, Mo. He sold the plant in the mid-1950s to Brown Shoe Co. After selling the Dixon shoe plant, Mr. Kaut worked as a manufacturer's representative for the leather industry before retiring about 12 years ago.

Mr. Kaut spent his childhood in Carthage, but was a graduate of University City High School and St Louis University. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Kriegshauser West Mortuary, 9450 Olive Boulevard, Olivette.

His body will be cremated. Among the survivors are his wife of 59 years, Madeline Kaut; a son, William Kaut III of Maryland Heights; and a sister, Virginia White of Paragould, Ark. Pass out crayons, and let students color in the sheets as they review.

Learn one new magic trick a week. Keep a collection of silly toys on your desk. Make eraser earmuffs and wear them when the class gets noisy. "When he named off the lunch menu, he'd say 'homogenous bovine juice with cocoa extract" for chocolate milk. We'd roll soup cans down inclines to talk about density. And you'd go home, tell your parents about it and without knowing it you would be reviewing. Lauren Davis, an art teacher at Parkway Central High School, uses humor in her classroom because it relaxes students and encourages creativity. In an art classroom, that gets results.

She shows off student work hang ing on the walls and projected in slides: a painting of the Statue of Liberty wearing an apron and wielding a spatula. A pastel drawing of a rooster gypsy and a group of chicks gazing into a crystal ball. A student's self-portrait complete with tennis shoes and jeans rumpled at the ankles drawn as he sat on the toilet Though Wolfe and Davis dont formally teach their methods to other educators, people like Jim Winter do. Winter, a Belleville native and former high school English teacher, concentrates on making teachers laugh. He founded a comedy troupe 17 years ago called 'Wavelength, which travels to schools and performs to point out the pitfalls and conquests of teaching.

During a recent teacher training day at Mascoutah High School Winter and his troupe presented several scenes addressing educational issues, drawing belly laughs and tears from teachers and administrators. When he performs, Winter says, he hears the laughter of recognition. So if no wonder that teachers roared when Winter, portraying a Forrest Gump-like character, shuffled on the stage and emitted this bit of truth: 'My mama always said, 'Education's like a box of chocolates.
