ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO MONDAY, APRIL 27, 1998 B5 http: www.stlnet.com ST. LOUIS DEATHS Herbert 0. Bangert, 74; was a contractor, singer it (Using pheremones is) going to have its place. Is it going to revolutionize everything? No.

But it's going to be a good step. 7 Rick Weinzierl, entomologist 13980 New Halls Ferry Road, Florissant. A funeral service will 7 i I held at 10 Wednesday Immanuel Church of be a.m. at Bangert United Church Moths Growers battle plan: Frustrate all the males Continued from Page Bl fused." If moths can't mate, they can't produce the eggs that hatch into codling moth worms in Eckert apples or oriental fruit worms in Eckert peaches. Eckert's owners have been experimenting with pheromone control of insects for two years, under the guidance of University of Illinois entomologist Rick Weinzierl.

"It was successful," Eckert said. This year, he has invested in enough pheromone dispensers to cover two 5-acre plots of apple orchard and a 12-acre plot of peach orchard. The dispensers are about 6 inches long and look like an ordinary kitchen twist tie, only heftier. The cost runs about $100 an acre. You just loop it a couple of times, Eckert said.

The practice, called 'mating disruption," is common among apple growers in Washington state and peach growers in California, Weinzierl said, but neither he nor Eckert know of anyone else in this region using it. Female moths ready to mate emit pheromone into the air like a tiny smoke plume, Weinzierl said. The male moth flies a zig-zag path, following the plume upstream to make contact. But with pheromone emanating wholesale from 400 dispensers in every acre, a male has no idea where to find a mate. "He can't discriminate between the real female and fake female," Weinzierl said.

After a while, he simply gives up. Environmentalists like such methods because they reduce reliance on pesticide sprays, and a pheromone will have an effect only within that species. The dispensers are lopped off with winter pruning or weather away. Weinzierl said he expects such practices among growers to increase, but emphasized that it can't be expected to replace sprays entirely. Eckert agreed.

"There are a lot of pests out there, and the codling moth is just one of them," he explained. Christ, 221 Street, Ferguson. 2556 South Brentwood Blvd. 962-0601 Herbert O. Bangert, a retired St. Louis area construction executive, died Sunday (April 26, 1998) of cancer at his home in University City. He was 74.

During the 1960s, Mr. Bangert was president of the old Busy Bee Material Construction Co. before retiring about 1970. Before starting his company, Mr. Bangert worked in his family's business, Bangert Brothers Construction Co.

A native of Berkeley, Mr. Bangert attended the University of Missouri at Columbia before World War n. During the war, he sang at USO facilities in France and Germany, and later sang with the Louis Prima Orchestra in New York. In 1965 and 1966, Mr. Bangert was president of the St Louis Paving Contractors Association.

He also served on the first council after Black Jack was incorporated in 1970. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Stygar Florissant Chapel, 'And, obviously, it doesn't take care of disease problems." But he said that companies that produce and distribute such products are now advertising them for a wide range of pests, two dozen or more. Pheromone dispensers have been used commercially for about 10 years, and experiments were under way long before that, Weinzierl said. Weinzierl expects pheromone use to grow.

"It's going to have its place," he said. "Is it going to revolutionize everything? No. But it's going to be a good step." Eckert has about 250 acres of apple trees and 150 acres of peach trees in orchards south of Belleville, near Millstadt and at Grafton. will be in Salem Cemetery in Black Jack. Among the survivors are his wife of 48 years, Doris M.
