TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 1997 R2 1p9A ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH 1997 GREATER ST. LOUIS SCIENCE FAIR In THne Fa Winners 2 Brothers Win Division Honors In Science Fair From page eight torn torn After the awards presentations the fair will close. But competition continues for Madhu Pocha, a senior at Parkway South High School, and Lau By Phyllis Brasch Librach Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Scraps of paper, left over from a mad dash to finish two science fair entries, still litter the living room of the house where teen-agers Jeff and Ryan McClintock live in Ballwin. "You can hardly walk in it," said their mother, Nancy McClintock.

The mess seems worthwhile now that the McClintock brothers each won a division honor at the Greater St. Louis Science Fair. Jeff, a seventh-grader at Parkway West, beat out 408 other entries with his study of how gravity affects the growth of lima beans and black-eyed peas. Ryan, a junior at Mary InstituteSt. Louis Country Day School, won from a field of 190 entries.

Ryan built six models of bridges to analyze how each structure handles stress, The McClintocks and seven other division winners will receive their honors at an awards ceremony at 7 tonight at Greensfelder Recreation Center at Queeny Park, 550 Weid-man Road in west St. Louis County. The division winners represent the students who took top honors in grades six through 12. Awards also will be presented to students in grades six through 12 who won blue ribbons. Winners who earned red and green ribbons and honorable mentions can pick up their awards after 3 p.m.

today at the Greensfelder Recreation Center. Also receiving awards tonight will be students who took top prizes in the honors division and those who won awards from private industry or professional associations. J. McClintock R. McClintock Parkway West High School who takes college-level biology.

The fair attracted more than 3,500 exhibits representing the work of 10,557 students at 346 schools in St. Louis, St. Louis County and Jefferson County. The Post-Dispatch and the Monsanto Fund sponsor the fair, in conjunction with St. Louis Community College at Forest Park.

The St. Louis County Department of Parks and Re creation provides free space at Queeny Park. As the fair marked its 50th anni- versary, event organizers honored Melba "Jimi" James with a plaque in appreciation of her service and dedication. James, a retired science teacher, has been with the fair for 39 years, including 21 as fair director. James labels the event the largest regional science fair in the country.

She expects the field of entries to grow again next year. Bigger could mean better for the McClintocksi why? Next year they could bring home three ribbons when Jeff and Ryan's younger sister, Amy, a sixth-grader at Parkway West Middle School, en ters for the first time. ra D. Mayberry, Kramer a senior at Hazelwood West. They will compete next month in the International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Ky.

Each has also received a $3,000 scholarship from the Monsanto Fund. Roberto Young, a junior at Sumner High, earned a red ribbon for his entry in the honors division. He downloaded images that showed a cross section of the brain to the hard drive of a medical computer. "And from there I transferred that image through the Internet to the hard drive of a Macintosh computer," he said. The same project earned Roberto, 16, a trip to Seattle to represent St.

Louis Public Schools at the National Junior Academies of Science fair. Many honors entries carried titles sure to leave most readers with a mouthful of unpronounceable words. Take Courtney A. Kramer's entry: "Reversibility of Dendritic Variocosi-ties After Hypoxia Ischemia Causing Glutamate Excitotoxicity." "Translated, it means I studied damage to the body's neurotransmitters caused by lack of oxygen and glucose and determined it can be reversed," said Courtney, a junior at NavyMarine Corps Distinguished Achievement Awards: certificate and graphing calculator to Elizabeth Wilcockson, Pattonville Senior; Stephanie Nash, Ursuline Academy; Ryan McClintock, Mary InstituteCountry Day School; Stephanie Piatt, Parkway South. Cunnane, 54, of Creve Coeur, is vying for the Republican nomination for the 3rd District County Council seat. Chuck Williams, 46, a real estate executive from Town and Country, also is a candidate. Both hope to succeed Mark Brodsky, who cited health reasons for his resignation last month.

Brodsky, a Republican, had 21 months left in his 4-year term. A special election is set for Aug. 5. Prior to that, nominees will be chosen by 16 members each of the Republican and Democratic county committees from the townships that include parts of the council district.
