You watch a while, and get used to the characters, and start laughing at them. They grow on you. Well, I've seen three episodes of "Friends" and two of "Madman," and the only thing that's grown is my irritation. Darn it, NBC, was this really the best you could do? Also premiering tonight is "Due South" (7 p.m. on Channel 4), the series version of last season's Canadian-American movie pairing Paul Gross as upright Canadian Mountie Benton Fraser and David Marciano as offbeat Chicago cop Ray Vecchio.

Last season, one of TV's small pleasures was to settle in for "Mad About You," "Wings," "Seinfeld" and "Frasier," followed by "L.A.

Law." All NBC had to do was find a strong new drama to replace "L.A. Law," which had run its course, and again we'd have had one night when we didn't need to pick up the remote control. Instead, the network got ambitious, trying to snatch Tuesdays from ABC by shifting "Wings" 8 and "Frasier" to that night. Never mind what that could mean to "Frasier," TV's best sophomore comedy what about those big gaps on Thursday? Replacing "Wings" (7:30 p.m. on Channel 5) beginning tonight, we get "Friends," in which Generation Xers hang out and commiserate about their love lives.

Monica (Courtney Cox) and Ross (David Schwimmer, who was law student "4B" on "NYPD Blue" last season), are brother and sister Ross and Monica. She's a cook; he runs a natural history museum. In tonight's pilot, his wile has left him. For a woman. Meanwhile, Monica gets a roommate, Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), who shows up after leaving her fiance at the altar.

Rounding out the sixsome are Chandler (Matthew Perry), an office drone; Joey (Matt LeBlanc), a would-be actor and Chandler's roommate; and Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), a ditzy aromatherapist who may have breathed too many fumes. (Kudrow also plays the ditzy waitress on "Mad About You," a character who will be explained as her twin sister.) All the characters lie on the couch a lot. While it's noted that they do have jobs, they seem to spend most of their time eating Oreos and watching TV. (Hey, that's my life And they talk, but most of what they have to say isn't very funny. Also not very funny is "Madman of the People," which follows "Seinfeld" (8:30 p.m.

on Channel 5). Gee, someone at NBC said, nobody liked "Buffalo Bill" (actually, I did) and nobody liked "Slap Maxwell," so let's give Dabney Coleman another comedy. Only let's make him less obnoxious this time. It didn't work. Coleman may have a wife and kids (the obligatory three) in "Madman," but he's no more cuddly, just more embarrassing.

Coleman plays Jack Buckner, an abrasive columnist for a New York magazine a professional eccentric," he boasts). His new publisher is his sweet daughter Meg (Cynthia Gibb of Concetta Tomei is his long-suffering wife, Delia. They also have a saintly married daughter and a goofy son, who lives at home and writes terrible song lyrics.
