6SC St. Charles Post MONDAY. JUNE 28, 1993 ST. PETERS ST. CHARLES Group Rejects Thrift Shop Offer Barbershop Chorus To Compete In Contest In Calgary, Alberta more than 1,700 quartets.

The Ambassadors of Harmony is the performing chorus of the. St. Charles chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America Inc. The chapter meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at Memorial Hall in Blanchette Park.

The public is welcome to attend. For more information, call Max Underwood at The Ambassadors of Harmony, a barbershop chorus in St. Charles, will compete in an international barbershop-chorus contest in Calgary, Alberta, on Saturday, July 3. The chorus is one of 20 that have attained this level of competition from more than 800 barbershop-society choruses. One of the local chapter's quartets, The Gas House Gang, will compete in the quartet competition.

I Many.of FISH's customers are poor JeoplePaul Bingaman, the president of FISH, has said that about 70 percent J)f the agency's customers at its St. Charles store were referred from the Division of Family Services. Recently St. Peters offered to lease a building to FISH for $1 a year.

At an aldermanic meeting Thursday, Alderman Jack Hunt, 3rd Ward, said FISH had rejected the offer. "I was very disappointed that our efforts were turned down," Hunt said. "This was a win-win-win situation." St. Peters officials were unwilling to discuss the details of the offer. The city does not own the property it offered to FISH but is considering acquiring it.

A city official says the property is on Mexico Road in a commercial area. The building is smaller than the one FISH currently is trying to buy. In a letter to St. Peters, Bingaman said that he had discussed the city's offer with the agency's board of directors and that they had rejected the plan. Bingaman did not return a telephone call on Friday.

The property for which FISH is negotiating with Magna Bank was offered for sale last year for $250,000. According to St. Charles County records, the property has a market value of about $450,000. The property, formerly a day-care center, has been vacant for about three years. The city has stopped work on the property until it receives what it considers to be adequate details on the building's renovation.

City officials are researching whether the shop would be a conforming use. The property is zoned C-3, the city's most liberal commercial zoning designation. At Thursday's meeting, Alderman Len Pagano, 3rd Ward, said he believed that the FISH operation would fall under light-industrial zoning. He said FISH operated more as a warehouse than as a commercial business. If city officials determine that FISH requires a light-industrial zoning, the organization would have to apply for rezoning the parcel before it could begin business.

However, city codes recommend against allowing light-industrial zoning adjacent to single-family housing.
