C6 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2001 ST. LOUIS DEATHS Catherine Warner Musician, teacher 4 Evansville, and Lancaster, Pa. She began playing the flute as a child and was teaching private music lessons by the age of 13. She grad-uated in 1974 with a bachelor's Warner Band director in Webster Groves School District mer Festive Muse Trio, the Mighty Mississippi Concert Band, the Washington University Wind Ensemble and occasionally the St Louis Philharmonic Orchestra.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Gerber Chapel, 23 West Lockwood Avenue, Webster Groves. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Graham Memorial Chapel at Washington University. In addition to her husband, among survivors are two daughters, Erin Warner and Annie Warner, both of Webster Groves; her parents, Mary and Nicholas Brown of Lancaster; two sisters, Susan Vore of Flint, and her twin sister, Barbara Brown of Mouth of Wilson, and a brother, Pat Brown of Signal Mountain, Tenn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Catherine Warner Memorial Scholarship Fund, co Gerber Chapel, 23 West Lock-wood Avenue, Webster Groves, Mo. 63119. In St Louis, Mrs. Warner taught the flute at the Conservatory and Schools for the Arts (CASA), now the St. Louis Symphony Community Music School, until 1996.

Mrs. Warner also gave private music lessons from her home and taught as an adjunct professor of flute at Webster University in Webster Groves and at the University of Missouri at St Louis. In 1998, Mrs. Warner was hired as a band director in the Webster Groves School District, serving at Steger Sixth Grade Center and later at Webster Groves High School. She resigned in January due to illness.

"She had this incredible sense of duty and loyalty she would schedule her chemotherapy treatments around classes," said Jackie Thompson, a friend and band director at Webster Groves High School. Mrs. Warner performed with several groups, including the for Catherine Comly Brown Warner, a longtime flutist and teacher, inspired many with her selfless commitment to students and colleagues. "She was not only a superlative musician herself, but her contributions to things, her responsibility to things, made her a role model and an inspiration to everybody around her," said Dan Presgrave, conductor of the Washington University Wind Ensemble. 1 Mrs.

Warner died Tuesday (Nov. 27, 2001) of cancer at her home in Webster Groves. She was 48. A native of Abingdon, Mrs. Warner grew up in Alexandria, U2 Band draws well in hard times for industry Continued from CI problem, says Pollster Editor in Chief Gary Bongiovanni, is not the caliber of the bands touring but the cost of tickets.

He noted that the last time America waded into a recession in 1991, a concert ticket cost as much as a good meal or a few martinis. Today, you can buy a plane ticket for less cash. Compare that with 1992, when U2 played Busch Stadium and fans could get in for $30. "You have the same cast of characters touring, so I don't think you can blame the talent pool," Bongiovanni said. "People still want to be entertained, but concerts are no longer a frivolous expense.

"You don't have to budget for a movie, but a concert can cost three figures and for many, that's not pocket change." U2 seems to be one of the few acts immune to the trend. The band has sold out every show on this tour except for these final dates. Reuters says the tour could take in $160 million by the time it ends early next month. Sawis Center General Manager Dennis Petrullo said the St. Louis show degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

While serving as a band director in Malvern, she met her future husband, Tatnall Warner, when she rented his parents' basement apartment They married in 1976 and moved to Webster Groves in 1980, shortly after she completed a master's degree in music education from Temple University in Philadelphia. was 2,000 seats shy of a sellout. Rock powerhouse Aerosmith has been less successful. The band has sold only 8,000 tickets for its Dec. 11 show about 4,000 fewer than expected and ticket sales have been off for a variety of events such as the Ringling Bros, and Barnum Bailey Circus and Blues hockey.

"When a U2 comes along, their gross revenues are phenomenal," Petrullo said. "Everything else seems to be down. It's just a cyclical business. Some years are great and some are marginal. This year is marginal." Some observers are not so sure the industry can bounce back.

They see escalating ticket costs as a long-term problem. Though fans continue to pay $100, even $200 to see their favorite acts, Bongiovanni says even fanaticism has its limits. "A lot of ego is involved. Everyone thinks they can get away with it," Bongiovanni said. Already acts such as the Dave Matthews Band and 'N Sync have announced plans to play smaller venues next year.

Promoters also expect bands to stage simpler shows or scale back the number of dates they play. Potential tours from the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney may bolster the sagging industry, but Hagin doubts they will repair its structural woes. "It's a little bit like baseball," Hagin said. "It's time to look at the whole picture." Missouri's newest casino, in Boom ilk', is on brink of opening approval is contingent on the company's demonstrating its compliance with safety and security standards next week. A mock cruise for staff and guests will take place from 2 to 4 p.m.

Wednesday. Barring problems, the commission's executive Missouri's 11th casino is likely to open next week in Boonville, after clearing a key regulatory hurdle on Wednesday. The Missouri Gaming Commission voted 3-0 to give its qualified approval to the license application by Isle of Capri Casinos. The director, Kevin Mullally, will issue the license the next day. Commissioners voted on the license early because two members may be out of the country next week and one slot on the five-member panel is vacant.

Chairman Glen Ullery, whose term had expired, has resigned. Isle of Capri, based in Biloxi, operates 14 casinos in Mississippi, Louisiana, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and Missouri. The Boonville boat will feature 900 slot machines and 28 table games. It will employ about 700 people. H.
