This Saturday, Quincy closes the season at Culver-Stockton (2-7), with an opportunity to post the first undefeated season in school history. Football began at Quincy in 1916 but was discontinued in 1953. The sport was reinstated as a junior-varsity program in 1986, and only this season has joined the Illini-Badger Conference.

Quincy is coached by Ron Taylor, a former head coach at Northeast Missouri State, where he compiled an impressive 26-14-1 record and won two Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association championships from 1975-78. One of their top players is Noby Gooden, a wide receiver, who stumbled onto the Quincy football team when he wore out his welcome on the Hawks basketball team. This season, Gooden, 6 feet 5, 220 pounds, has 58 catches for 771 yards and 10 touchdowns. "He was on scholarship to play basketball at Quincy, and his first year he led the, team in scoring and rebounding," sports information' director Damian Becker said. Gooden averaged 13.9 points and 8.4 rebounds in 1991-92, but the team finished 8-20 and it was determined that in "Noby's best interest it was best" that he and coach Steve Hawkins part company, Becker said.

National Football League scouts are inquiring about Gooden, who can cover 40 yards in 4.5 seconds, Becker said. Last season, Gooden snared 41 passes for 580 yards and eight touchdowns, and he was named Quincy's offensive most valuable player. This season, he is the centerpiece of the Hawks' attack that also features quarterback-Jake Ryan, fullback Rob Munson and St. Louisans Mike. Carrawell and Torrey Barrett.

Ryan (Jacksonville, a senior, holds every passing record at the school. For his career, he is 304 of 618 for 4,076 yards and 31 touchdowns. Munson (Hamilton, a sophomore, has rushed for 1,008 yards and 14 touchdowns. Meramec wrestlers began their season Saturday with a 36-3 victory over the University of Indiana club squad. Meramec also wrestled against Lindenwood College, but suffered a 34-12 loss to the Lions, who are ranked ninth in NAIA.

Among host Meramec's undefeated wrestlers Saturday were Scott Stefl (Oakville), David Stefl (Oakville) and a freshman, Shannon McMurtry (Ritenour). Meramec will compete at the Central Missouri State Open this weekend. Principia receiver Matt Newton had nine catches for 159 yards and no touchdowns in the Panthers' 22-0 victory over Concordia University in Chicago Saturday. Newton finishes the season with 96 catches for 1,080 yards. He closes his career with 286 receptions, which ranks him second among collegiate receivers behind Jerry Rice, who had 301 from 1981-84 at Mississippi Valley.

"They made nice defensive plays on him. They made him earn his catches," Principia sports information director Phil Webster said. Principia closed the season 4-4. The Northeast Missouri men's cross country team placed sixth at the Great Lakes Regional Meet for Division II teams, missing qualifying for the NCAA Division II nationals. Jeremy Struttmann, a freshman from St.

Pius, was NEMO's highest finisher at 17th place.
