For many years he was blind and paralyzed and dictated his music. Although the other works of the Delius Trust Series have not been announced let us hope thev include, "Sea Drift," "Appalachia," "Violin Concerto." "Brigg Fair," "Over the Hills and Far Away." "Piano Concerto," "Koanga," "Hassan," and "Paris." Another current Columbia Masterworks album: Berlioz "Romeo and Juliet: Dramatic Symphony (Complete)" Conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos, the New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra album is the first complete recording of the five-part dramatic symphony. It is bound to he a best seller, since Berlioz' "Symphonic Fantastique" and "Harold in Italy" were among the three top best selling Columbia Masterworks albums in 1952.

Brahms' "Symphony No. 2" This RCA Victor album, featuring Arturo Toscaiini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra, presents a paradox. That is, Brahms' "Cradle Song" is his most famous composition yet his "Symphony No. 2" Is the least popular of his four symphonies. The opening theme in "Symphony No.

2" Is almost a dead ringer for "Cradle Song." However, lack of popularity does not mean Inferiority. Brahms' "Piano Concerto No. 2" is another RCA Victor album hut does not fall into neglected music. The concerto, as played by Artur Rubenstein and the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Charles Munch conducting, is a long-time favorite. Bela Bartok's "Dance Suite" the Hungarian-American composer's 1923" opus, composed for the 50th anniversary of the union of Buda and Pest, iii i ii mi in wirmtiwi iiiuli 'COSI FAN TUTTE' cost for PCW's opera workshop to be presented Friday evening ot Carnegie Music Holl includes in front, left to right, Ruth Cotton, Betty one Packer and Patricio Moore.

The 19-year-old actress originally was signed to a long-term contract as a result of a nationwide talent search for a girl to play the ingenue lead in the Ginger Rogers-William Holden-Paul Douglas starrer, "Forever Female." Miss Crowley will be headlined In "Red Garters" with Rosemary Clooney, Joanne Gilbert. Don Taylor, Guy Mitchell and Gene Barry. of the Delius Trust Series and the man in charge is Sir Thomas Beecham, the composer's most ardent champion and acknowledged authoritative interpreter. He conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for these "wonderful recordings. This Delius series Is hein? recorded exclusively for Columbia Masterworks and presents Sir Thomas Bee-cham In new performances of Delius. This means collectors can now weeding out their old Delius Society 7fl rpm shellac albums that Sir Thomas made for Columbia Masterworks in the 1930s. Sir Thomas, musical adviser for the Deljus Festival in London in 1929, has done more than any man in promoting this great but neglected composer.

"Eventyr (Once Upon a Time)" is a 1919 opus inspired by a Norwegian folk lore. "North Country Sketches" was composed in 1917 to depict mood pictures of Yorkshire. The sections: Autumn, The Wind Boughs in the Trees, Winter Landscape, and The March of Spring. Delius, horn in Bradford, England, in 1SR2. is one of music's strangest figures.

His music defies being pegged or analyzed it's simply in a class by itself. His rich harmonies and wonderful melodies and subtle orchestration all add up to the most restful music that exists. During1 the 1880s. Delius lived In Florida on the pre-text of running an orange-plantation. That's the only way he would get his antl-music father to grub stake him in America.

In Florida, Delius studied music and came under the influence of Negro slave songs. Actually, Delius' music has more of the "New World" than has Dvorak who followed him to America in the 1890s. Delius taught music in Danville, before returning to Europe to study at Leipsig. This was made possible by the intervention of Edvard Grieg, Norway's No, 1 composer, f. Karp and a highly co-operative Itaff it has been making great progress.

There is a a need for an opera workshop of substance in this district. This need was first recognized by the late Frances G. Lewando, whose ideas and sugges- Mr. Lewando tions were instrumental in the founding of the Opera Workshop. Her many meeting with Mrs.

Albert F. Kelster helped rrystalize the ideas into plans that reached happy realization. The complete title of the Mozart opera is "Cosi an tutte, pssia La Scuola dagli Amanfi" (So Do They All. or School for Lovers). It is one of the three last operas of Mozart.

The others are "The Clemency of Titus" and "Magic Flute." This will be (he first public offering: of (his opers In Pittsburgh. The participants will be members of (he Opera Workshop classes. To ee and hear (hem Is to know that they are on the way fulfillment of (heir aspirations. There should be a big turnout for this worthy occasion. Richard Karp, Pittsburgh Opera musical director and director of the Opera Workshop since its inception, will conduct the performance.

mpressve Pcrformsnct One of the most Impressive chamber music recitals ever heard here was played last Sunday afternoon in Carnegie Lecture Hall. The event was sponsored by the Fine Arts Society, which Vladimir Bakaleinikoff founded several years ago and of which Mrs. Robert J. Dodds is the chairman. The occasion was notable also in that William Steinberg, the Pittsburgh Symphony's musical director, made his first appearance in this city as an ensemble pianist.

With violinists Samuel Thaviu and Murray Feld-man, vlolist Kras Malno and rpllist Then Salman, Mr. Steinberg prrfnrmed the plann quintets of Brahms and Dvorak. Janet Remington, harpist; D. Stanley Hasty, clarinet, and L'than Stang, flute in collaboration with the above mentioned string players, performed Ravel's "Introduction and Allegro." Monumental Design All the performers are first rhair players of the Symphony. The Brahms piano quintet is one of the glorious works of the ensemble repertory.

It is monumental in design, noble In utterance and gripping in the vitality of Its appeal. This splendid work was first written for five strings which included two cellos, and was then converted Into a piano sonata (which is still obtainable as opus Ai. Then the present quintet was ev olved. It comprises four vivid movements. The playing nf Mr.

And it was that under the sturdy fingers of Mr.

Steinberg's virtuosity and musical mastery. Upon every detail of each phrase he lavished devoted attention. Yet all of his pianism was re-fleeted in flexibility and elasticity that helped no end to lift the performance Into the heights of inspiring achievement. Auditnct Transfixed1 Mr. Steinberg and his fellow musicians unfolded the opening Allegro non froppo with a strength and richness that kept the audience transfixed.

The rapturous Andante tin poco adagio was sung with exquisite effect, and the de-' manding scherzo was nothing less than rousing. The finale was built up to a marvelous climax that evoked an ovation from the excited listeners. The Ravel "Introduction and Allegro," which followed proved a grand contrast. Whereas the Brahms work is virile and strong as granite, the Ravel work sparkles with the quintessence of flligreed gold shimmering in sunlight. She is an artist of com manding resourcefulness In technical attainment and interpretative breadth. All of her playing was beautifully done, and the long florid cadenza was done with entrancing loveliness of tone and style. Clarinetist Hasty and flutist Stang blended their parts with delicacy and charm, and the string quartet merged their respective efforts with skilled musicianship.

The performance called forth hearty acclamation. Downtown Chorale The Downtown Chorale led by John R.
