LOUISVILLE, May 2 (UP) Dark Star, a $6500 bargain basement beauty, led from start to finish today to win the 79th annual running of the Kentucky Derby as the favorite, Native Dancer, finished second.

The Cain Hoy stable's brown colt beat The Dancer by a head with Invigorator Ave lengths behind and Royal Bay Gem more lengths back in fourth place. It was Native Dancer's first defeat in his racing career while it was only the sixth triumph for Dark Star, who has made only 11 starts as a two and three-year-old. Given a brilliant ride hy Jockey Hank Moreno, Dark Star ran the mile and a quarter in 2:02 and paid $13.60 and $7.00 across the board. Native Dancer paid $3.20 and $2.80. In-vigoratnr returned $9.40.

'Moreno took Dark Star to the front a the field of 11 left the starting; gn and never yielded the lead. Native Dancer started well hack in the hut started to make a run for the lead as the field entered the head of the stretch. The Dancer was coming the strongest at the finish, but he started his stretch drive just too late to catch the flying Dark Star. It marked the first Derby victory for Moreno and also for Harry F. Guggenheim, owner of Cain Hoy Stable.

His only other Derby entry, Battle Morn, finished sixth in 1951. By LESTER J. BIEDERMAN Carlos Bernier, who has played on nothing but winning teams all his basebll career, continued to be the inspirational force as the Pirates rolled to their biggest victory march in almost three years yesterday at Forbes 1 XI STRAIGHT FACE vjj, Lrt Correspondent, Arcaro Finish Fifth rnrt'flenAHftrtf A i i .1 ieia. The fleet-footed 24 -year -old Puerto Rican outfielder spearheaded a vicious Bucco attack on the Redlegs with three ooom-ing triples and a single as the Pirates walked off with an easy 12-4 decision before a crowd of 7437 paid customers and 4324 members of the knothole gang. It was the fourth straight win for the surprising Pirates and the seventh loss in a row for Cincinnati.

Bernier Steals Show Bernier wasn't the whole show but he was the outstanding star. He singled in the first inning off Bud Podbielan, stole second and scored one of the two Buc runs, and beginning with the fourth inning, he was a ball of fire. 3 1 uuirai uy aivhiu, wno was snooung ior his sixth Derby triumph, finished fifth with Straight Face, Social uuichm, ivioney croKcr, itam war, Uirragh King and Ace De dark star stroyer following in that order. Dark Star's triumph netted his owner $91,100 and brought hi earning to $120,837. His outstanding previous triumph was when he won the Derby Trial on Tuesday.

In winning the Derby and the Trial, he became only the third horse ever to do so. Citation did it in 1948 and Hill Gail last year. It was the first Derby for Moreno, a Chicago lad, who started out walking and galloping horses at the Hawthorne race track in his home town. He started at the Fleasanton, Fair, July 4, 1945, but never really got; up into the top ranks of jockeys before, although he won the Hollywood Gold Cup on Two Lea and the Western with A Gleam. In losing, Native Dancer, who had won 11 straight races and never had been beaten In his racing career, upheld a Derby tradition that a gray-colored horse never wins the classic. Holds Lead All the Way Ace Destroyer, another gray, started off in front as the field got away, but Dark iStar, starting from No. 10 post position, overtook him in the first few strides. At the half it was Dark Star by a length with Correspondent second by two lengths, Ace Destroyer third, Face fourth and Money Broker fifth. Native Dancer, who started off sixth, had dropped back to eighth place at that point.

At the three-quarter mile mark, It was Dark Star by a length and a half, with Correspondent moving into second place. Straight Face was third, and Native Dancer had moved Into the fourth spot on the outside. It looked like Eric Gunrin, up on The Dancer, was making his bid with the 3 to 5 favorite. But at the mile mark The Dancer still was fourth and had lost ground as Dark Star maintained a length and a half lead with Correspondent a fading second and Straight Face, who also was running out of gas, third. Into the stretch, Dark Star stfll was in front by a length and a half but Native Dancer was second row with Correspondent third and Invigorator fourth.

Native Dancer, who had been roughed by Money Broker at the first turn, went to the outside for the run down heart-break highway and it looked like he would overtake Dark Star. But Moreno kept urging his horse on, and while he finished with little left. It Mill was a head better than Native Dancer. It was a disappointing defeat for Owner Alfred Vanderbilt, who felt certain he was going to score his first Derby triumph. His only other Derby entry, Discovery, finished second to Cavalcade back in 1931.

Guerin complained that Native Dancer "got sloughed on the first; turn and didn't seem to like the track" which was fast.
