New Tork, Aug. 26, 1806. Hilton, Hughes ft the big dry goods firm, assigned to-day. George Wright, the assignee, la a lawyer. He had no cor nectlon with the firm, but Is a friend of ex-Judge Hilton.

Mr. Wright will give out a statement In reference to the assignment this afternoon. It Is said that the assignment waff duo to the stringency of the money market and contraction of trade. Pusiness has fallen off and it was deemed advisable to make the assignment in order to protect all creditors. Every creditor, Is stated, will be paid in full.

The llrm of Hilton, Hughes Co. Is one of the largest and best known in the retail dry goods trade. They did un enormous business, and when, some days ago, rumors became ourrent that the iirm was In financial trouble, there was much surprise and doubts as to their correctness were freely expressed. The business firm wns established by the late Alexander T. Stewart In 1823.

Some time after Mr. Stewart's death, In 1876, the firm name was changed to that of E. J. Denning and so continued until about five years ago. Upon Mr.

Dennlng's death, at that time, It was again changed, ex-Judge Hilton becoming' senior partner, and the business continued under the present firm name. The business for the last quarter of a century has been carried on in the great establishment located In the block bounded by Broadway, Fourth avenue and Ninth and Tenth streets. The failure Is a very heavy one, and the liabilities and assets will run Into the millions. When the l.BOO or more employes reached the store this morning they were startled to discover the blinds down and three or four policemen standing on the streets fronting the store. During the height of the season Hilton, Hughes Co.

had frequently employed, Including Inside and outside heln over hunds. Recently the help had not exceeded 1,110. Purlng the past four months the staff had been constantly reduced, the number laid off since May exceeding 400. A representative of one of the commercial agencies was early on the scene. "The firm," he said, "had not been considered strong for over a year past.

It has been slow In making Its payments. Within a recent period It nnd come to my knowledge that many firms had declined to sell them goods. The liabilities, 1 expect, will, reach $700,000." had been placed In the Institution on Tues (jaras; snouia do uc. day by Agent Bell, of the Humane society. football team are getting In some good training at Mecox Inn, Long Island. In another week the men will ne up In teams and then the real test will come and with it the weeding out process. It is thought the team will scarcely be as strong as that of the season pf t4 and '95, and the loss of the Invincible Brooke and the great Bull and Will ams and Waggenhurst will be keenly felt. Notwithstanding these losses, the men feel that the team will be strong enough to defeat both Yale and Harvard if games can be arranged with them. The team will leave the Inn on the 24th and will play its first game on the 28th at Franklin field.

All the men are gaining their wind and losing weight rapidly and Bet down the field very fast, particularly Gelbert ana Byron Dickson who if played would give Pennsy, In the opinion of many, a pair of star end rushes. Brooke will shortly take hold of Minds, who is a promising candidate for fullback. If the latter will Team to kick as well as Brooke he will fill what Is now a very weak place on the team. It is quite probable that the team will be seen here fo a game during the season. Gideon, of the racing board of the League of American Wheelmen, baa expressed his intention of retiring from the head of the racing interests fit the league at the expiration of his term of office In February. Gideon declares that the government of professional racing by the league has Increased the duties of tha chairman to such an extent that no man can properly attend to the racing duties of tha L. A.

W. unless he is enabled to devote his entire time to the dudes of the office. Chairman Gideon alleges that It looks as though the league bo comoelled, owing to the Increased interest In racing matters, to maka the office of chairman of the racing board a salaried one. This idea has 'been suggested for the last two seasons, but the league officers, with the idea of reducing Its financial outlay to the lowest possible amount, refused to accept the suggestion. Now that professional racing has received such strong support and has been made such a prominent feature at the big amateur meets, its government has engaged the attention of the racing officials to suoh an extent that the amateur sections have been somewhat overlooked.

Under the L. A. W. system of facing at the present time It Is difficult for the racing board to orooerly look after both the amatrur and professional interests, and it Is felt that in the event of Chairman Gideon resigning his office he will be enabled through his exrerlence this year to give valuable assistance to the league In the method of suggestions for the proper conduct of the racing department.
