The first trial of the machine, with those rods attached was on the 'Varsity field with Jack McMaster as a spectator. The gun was fired. "Now you have said Jack.

"That's a nine-Inch curve." Subsequent Investigations showed that Trainer McMaster was right and! the work of improving the rod went on. "Now, that I had th required ourve, I thought my labors would soon be crowned with success, but far from It I had to ascertain the amount of powder to put In every load, how to give the batter a motion on the machine similar to that of a pitcher, ni-rt may other trials and unthoughtof difficulties arose. Ordinary powder, I find, bleaches the ball after a few discharges, and smokeless powders are too quick. A powder mad by a firm in New York does very well and answers my purpose. It is almost without and gives the ball a better Impetus than any powder I have as yet discovered." The remainder of Prof.

Hlnton's lecture was devoted to the explanation, of how the ball was given its curve and the mathematical reasons for its so doing. Prof. Hinton explained the curve with Illustrations of firing the cannon and showing how the fingers made the ball take the curve and how the size and length of the twirl could be regulated. It Is expected that ttili discovery will revolutionize the game of baseball. Capt.

Bradley is going to use the cannon in practice next season, and if the gun does the work It is expected to do, Princeton will have a team of heavy hitters. The great fault with the gun is that the batter is unable to see when the ball Is coming and hence loses the practice of observing the lifting of the pitcher's' foot, the throw of his arm and other actions connected with the delivery of a ball. Prof. Hinton thiij- he can tlx this matter up alright by putl. a sort of an arm en the machine which rill imitate the movement of a pitcher's arm.
