In announcing Uawson's sudden resignation after 3Vi years as head coach and a 20-year association with Baylor, the school's athletic c'irector, Jack Patterson, announced that Jim Haller had been elevated to head coach on a permanent basis. Dawson, 37, said quitting that he was leaving "to Rive the team new direction." He was not present at the press conference Thursday afternoon when the- announcement of his resignation was made. At that time, he was informing the team of his decision. Immediately afterwards, he left Waco, saying only that he was going back to his parents' home at Alba, a small community 40 miles northwest of Tyler in East Texas, to "think about it." The decision came after the Bears lost a 75-71 overtime verdict to SMU at Dallas, That left the Bears with a S-J conference record.

Ironically, the M-year-old Hatter will playing In his first game as head coach a man who also stepped Into a head position during the middte of the season. Gerald Myers assumed Die reins at Tech one game into the 1971 SWC season, when Bob Bass resigned to accept a position with the Miami Floridians of the now-defunct American Basketball Association. Dawson had a 12'13 record his fiist season after moving up from assistant under Bill Mtmefee.

An all-SWC performer for Baylor, Dawson joined the Baylor staff as an assistant in and then took over in' 7,1 when Mencfcc resigned to takeanolher position at Baylor. Mailer joined the Baylor staff when Dawson was elevated. He had been coach at McLennan Community College here. In his only year there, he took the team to the national Junior college tournament.

After making his decision, Dawson told Baylor athletic department officials he did not know what he would do, beyond returning to Alba to think about the matter. Winning Secondary To Wooden By DON HENRY Executive Sports Editor It's not who won or lost, but how you played the game. Really.

And, John Wooden should know: he has won many, many more than he ever lost while coaching UCLA to ten national basketball championships. This is Wooden's theory, and he expounded on it Thursday afternoon at a press conference. Wooden was in Lubbock to speak at Texas Tech as one of a scries of lecturers at the University Center. He is the first sports figure to speak as part of the cultural series. Wooden closed out his collegiate coaching career with a win over Kentucky in the national finals in and that win was his 885th.

But, winning must be taken in stride, he said Thursday. As he put it, "you don't have to outscore someone to win. "I tried not to put so much emphasis on winning. You must learn to do well. When you lose the incentive to do well, in whatever you're doing, then there should be some concern," he said.

"But, if you put it (the emphasis) on winning strictly, then halt of the people have to be losers. There can only be 50 per cent of the teams winning "To my players (at UCLA). I never mentioned winning. I wanted them to do the best they could. The last thing I'd tell them before we left the dressing room before a game was, 'the main thing when the game is over is to hold your head "If you know you did your best, then yon should not be disappointed." Then, Wooden attacked the theory from a different angle.

"I've tried On coaching) to avoide the peaks and valleys. You would not see any of our teams jumping around, even after our national championship games. Not that they didn't feel the elation of winning. But, we had tried to prepare them for it. "If you don't try to do your best, you lose." Wooden now makes about 30-35 lectures a year on college campuses, in addition to his work in a dozen coaching clinics.

He misses the games, but he also misses the practices more. Yes, practice sessions. "That is my work, in preparation (for a game). If we have prepared well, the game is just an extension of that, and if you have not prepared well, you will not play as well." Now out of coaching, he gets to court- See WINNING Page 3 Don Henry Decisions And Dashes WHEN TIME AND space run Haider cage boss Gerald Myers knows exactly how Jim Haller feels, taking over a team in the middle of the season. "But Haller (who was elevated Thursday when Carrol) Dawson resigned) will have them (the Baylor Bears) pumped up (when Tech plays them Saturday).

They'll be playing at home, for one thing," said Myers. "Haller helped recruit so many of the players, and he has been there three years, so the change isn't real drastic." Myers had been at Tech only one semester when Bob Bass left during the 1970-71 season and Myers was Those who said the Aggies were a young bnll club last fall used the 25 playing freshmen and sophs as an argument. So much so that the deficit estimates run as high as $70,000. This comes as no great surprise to Fred Akers, however.

"We told them (school officials) before we went this could happen. It was a case of going first class or just going," he hns since remarked from his new position at With LCC and TT scheduling a baseball game Ihis season (Feb. 22), it's a wish from this corner that the two schools make it an annual affair. LCC has reached parity with Tech in baseball, and Ihis could be a good series for both schools, especially in local interest.
