CIO www.STLtoday.com ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO SUNDAY, JUNE 29, 2003 Banner blueberry crop is drawing crowds to Missouri farm ST. LOUIS DEATHS Warren Stewart Retired from newspaper By Juliana Goodwin Tanner Hofbauer, 3, shows a blueberry to his brother Ross, 6, at Persimmon Hill Berry Farm in Lampe, Mo. They are from Overland Park, Kan. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS glass window through which customers can watch the cooking process that sells fresh cobblers, frozen blueberry drink, jams, an Amaretto blueberry syrup and grilling sauces.

The farm's blueberry barbecue sauce garnered first place in the 1994 American Royal International Barbecue Contest in Kansas City. This year, the couple began selling pulled pork sandwiches with a choice of sauce for lunch customers. Martha and Earnie Bohner bought the land in 1982 after moving to the area from Seattle. Martha, originally from South Carolina, says the you-pick farm is Earnie's brainchild. "We wanted to be closer to home," says Earnie, a Glendale High School graduate.

"We liked the concept of the farm." While the couple grow a slew of other crops including blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, apples and shiitake mushrooms they're famous for their blueberries, they say. "What people are going to enjoy is the farm and picking. Ifs a social activity. The blueberry is how we make a living," Earnie says. And whaf the best part about picking blueberries? "Eatin' 'em," says young namon sugar.

On this day, a line of people waiting to pay for their goodies forms a horseshoe around the porch and down the stairs of the bakery. "We've had days where we sell 1,400," says Earnie Bohner. "We go through thousands. It is a killer muffin. People really enjoy them." Jan Watson agrees: "They're awesome." Martha Bohner credits the muffin for carrying the farm through the unprofitable winter.

Only four of the farm's 75 acres are planted with blueberries, but there are about 5,000 plants on those four acres. When selecting berries, think color, not size, and look for deep purple-blue or bluish-black. "Blueberries are ripe when they're blue all the way around," says Martha Bohner. "They ripen from the center around to the back of the stem." Jean Drygalski jokes and wonders how much profit is lost while people pick. "They should weigh people before they come in and after they go," she says.

If you don't want to pick your own, you can also buy pre-picked berries for $2.35 a pound, versus $1.80 when you pick. Persimmon Hill also has a farmhouse bakery which has a Springfield News-Leader LAMPE, Mo. With a white bucket tied around her waist and a mounting collection of fresh blueberries inside, Jan Watson surveys the bushes in front of her and listens to her boys gab from two rows over. Her sons, Nick Bobo, IS, and Taylor Watson, 8, pluck fresh berries off the vine, occasionally chucking them at each other. The youngest is able to dodge the fly- 1 ing fruit by zipping in and out of the crop rows.

Ifs just good clean fun, says their mom, and one of the reasons why this family has driven all the way from Mississippi to pick ber- ries every year for the past five years. June ushers in blueberry season, and people from neighboring states and all over Missouri flock to Persimmon Hill Berry Farm to pick blueberries and feast on the farm's oversize Thunder" muffins. The owners of the Lampe farm Martha and Earnie Bohner have dubbed the weather leading up to this year's crop "the perfect storm." This is a very good year," Earnie Bohner says. "Early in the fall, if you dont have good moisture you don't have a good berry. Ifs been outstanding.

Lots of ni- Warren Stewart, a retired employee of the Post-Dispatch, died Tuesday (June 24, 2003) of complications of Alzheimer's disease at his residence in St. Clair. He was 83. Mr. Stewart was born in St Louis.

He served in the Army in World War in Europe and Africa. After the war, he married the former Sylvia Hartmann. She died in 1995. He began his career in the mailroom of the Post-Dispatch in 1959. He retired in 1984.

He was an avid reader, occasionally liked to hunt and was an amateur actor. A funeral service will be noon Monday at Kutis South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, in south St Louis County. Burial will be' at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Among the survivors are a daughter, Joyce Joseph of St Clair; and one grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of St Louis, 9374 Olive Boulevard, St.

Louis, Mo. 63132. trogen. We've had moisture this spring. We call it the perfect blueberry storm." And the pluckers in the field say they can tell the difference, too.

There are a plethora of berries, higher shrubs and plumper fruit, pickers say. Blueberries are a relative of the huckleberry, from the plant genus Vacciniume, and are jam-packed with nutrition. One cup of blueberries contains 3 grams of fiber, 129 milligrams of potassium, vitamin and 81 calories, according to Terry Egan, regional nutrition specialist with the University Outreach and Extension in Springfield. And the benefits keep coming. Blueberries help combat urinary tract infections.

"They contain anthocyanides, which may explain the effective ness of blueberries in urinary tract infections," Egan says. They are said to be anti-bacterial and anti-diarrheal." According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, blueberries ranked highest in antioxidants when compared with 40 other fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants help ward off certain types of cancer and may fight high cholesterol and signs of aging. Blueberries also are credited with improving memory and eyesight, according to the North American Blueberry Council.

Blueberry season began June 1 and stretches through the second week of July, the Bohriers say. In those six weeks, customers scurry on and off the fields. Some just come for the Thunder muffins Texas-size treats made daily with robust fresh blueberries and a dusting of cin FUNERAL NOTICES jjgg" THOMPSON, HARLEY on Monday, June 23. 2003, in Fruit-land Park, FL; beloved husband of Jewell L. It does not envy, ft does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never remains is faith, hope and love.
