(UPI) -The tackle-busting running of fullback Warren Muir and the passing of Tommy Suggs yes-t a gave Peach Bowl-bound South Carolina a 27-13 victory over Clemson. Tailback Rudy Hollman scored twice for the Gamecocks before a sellout crowd of 42-941 in the traditional grudge battle. One came on a seven-yard plunge "in South Caro-lins's opening drive and the other on a 32-yard pass from Suggs in the third period to cap a 57-yard drive. Muir bowled over tacklers for long yardage all afternoon end scored on a three-yard plunge in the first period, climaxing a 68-yard drive high; lighted by a 37-yard pass from Suggs to split end Fred Zeig-ler. Billy Dupre, the Gamecocks' soecer-style kicking specialist, added a field goal of 21 yards in the second quarter in a drive that bogged down when Suggs was shaken up.

Nebraska's brawny defense, as strong as the south wind which raked the field, smothered Oklahoma's offense. It broke Steve Owens' string of games rushing 100 yards or more at 17 and clipped the Sooners' home-game winning streak at 15. Kinney, 194-pounder, scored on runs of 10 and 3 yards, caught an eight-yard pass from quarterback Van Brown-son for another and passed seven yards to end Guy Ingles for still another. Brownson plunged over from the one, reserve halfback Jeff Hughes bolted over from the seven and Rogers kicked a 26-yard field goal to complete Nebraska's scoring.

Oklahoma 's sophomore quarterback Jack i 1 scored the Sooners first touchdown on Oklahoma's first play of the game, scampering 18 yards off tackle. Mildren passed 16 yarn's to reserve wingback Geoffrey Nordgren in the last quarter for Oklahoma's pnly other touchdown. -1 The victory gave Bob Deva-ney's Cornhuskers their first share of the league title since 1960. Nebraska, with a 6-1 record, shares it with Missouri, which defeated Kansas 69-21 yesterday. mifCt if 1 7Ttrf "11UI1 HUT" fill inrrrlf-r -r, if i it-mifll-nl n'f li-f'ill J-fTfii i BALL RETURNS WEIGHS OVER 660 LBS.

For most of three quarters In 20-degree weather West Virginia played with a handicap itself. The Mountaineers sustained Syracuse drives with penalties and shortchanged their own cause with Orangemen recovered. The most costly, at the time, was Sherwood's bobble at the Syracuse five in the third period, when the Orange held a 10-point lead. It was recovered by the home team's Rick Ko-sosky. Sherwood atoned for that sin and then some the rest of the way.

Mike Sherwood, a blind man who tries to hide it, saw Jim Braxton just long enough for a quick pitchout late in the third quarter yesterday and the 65-yard touchdown run carried West Virginia to a comeback 13-10 victory over Syracuse before a shivering, imbibing gathering of 21,409 at Archbold Stadium. "Mike's the best option quarterback in the country," West Virginia Coach Jim Car-lcn said after the Mountaineers' ninth i in 10 games, which is enough to make a man wonder what Sherwood might accomplish if he could see. Incredibly nearsighted, with 20-200 vision in his right eye and 20-60 in his left, Sherwood dons glasses only after the final whistle. "I tried wearing contact lenses," he said, "but I didn't like them and I figure I can see well enough to get by." Getting past Syracuse halfback Duane Walker at the 30-yard line was Braxton's problem on the winning touchdown run which resulted when Sherwood was about to be tackled at the line of scrimmage. Hemmed in on the West Virginia sideline, Braxton somehow eluded the last man for the longest score he's had since he he ran a kickoff back 91 yards at Connellsville (Pa.) High School.

"I guess I Just stuck him Instead of him stucking me," was the way Braxton described his avoidance of Walker. The victory, achieved after Syracuse had forged a 10-0 lead in the first half, enabled West Virginia to finish the season with the second-best record in its history. Only the BUY NOW OUR FAMOUS GOLDEN FALCON SNOW TIRES masochist in the West Virginia backfield, totaled 102, more than enough to lift him over the 1000 mark for the season. In the first half, however, the dynamic duo was held to only 58 yards by Syracuse's hard-headed defense, one of the best in the nation. "We just ran out of gas In the second half," said Syracuse.

Coach Ben Schwartz-waldcr, "it's happened to us in other games." The Orange's defeat marks the first time it has been beaten in successive years by West Virginia, although the Mountaineers still trail in the series, 11-6. Syracuse's goal-line hadn't been violated for 13 straight quarters until West Virginia scored in the final three minutes of the third period. Braxton's mad dash down the sideline came only one minute and 52 seconds later. For the first score, West Virginia drove 51 yards in 10 plays. Sherwood squinted to see tight end Jim Smith for a 27-yard completion and the.

final four yards were accomplished on a four-yard strike to Wayne Porter over the middle. Bob Pastin's missed pla-cekick, however, still left Syracuse with a 10-6 lead. The Orangemen had scored first on a 47-yard field goal by George Jakowenko late in the first quarter. Syracuse added to Its lead in the second period on a one-yard plunge by Al Newton. The drive started at the West Virginia 38, after Thad Kuch-erawy's short punt which resulted from a high center snap.
