LUUIS MONDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1991 REVIEWS Choreographer's 'Eghost' Offers Mixture Of Talk, Ego By James Wierzbicki Of the Post-Dispatch Staff has Choreographer Rachel Lampert been performing word-rich vignettes at least since the late 1970s, but most of her creations in this genre contain far more dancing than does the 80-minute piece she presented over the weekend in Washington University's drama studio. This talky and remarkably non-kinetic effort is called "Eghosts: Inventory 1991." Ghosts, indeed, figure into the script. Crucial segments involve Lampert's communication with the spirit of a recently departed colleague, and much of the monologue that weaves around this unifying device features Lampert attempting to come to grips with various other specters. Knock a few letters out of the title, though, and you get the work's real theme.

"Eghosts" is mostly about ego Lampert's ego, which is very large but a apparently very fragile. As catharsis, the piece is perhaps a success. As theater, it is decidedly unappealing. In one of the episodes she related on Saturday, Lampert told how her mother had reacted to one of her early dances. Distressed at the pointedness of the autobiographical references, the mother says: "Well, I suppose you just had to do it." One supposes Lampert, a fortysomething artist still struggling for recognition, just had to make this apology for her career.

She bemoans New York City's dominant position in the American dance world, yet she rags about how a yearlong residency in Arkansas unfairly distanced her from the New York scene. She pleads guilty to profiting from commercial work, yet she regrets that her forays into the commercial arena began before that of thing became artistically fashionable. She is put off, she says, by "cultural to hear Lampert, one would surmise that she is one of the biggest cultural snobs in the business. It was more an unresolved gripe session than a confessional. "Be picky about what haunts you," the friendly ghost suggests at the end.

For anyone who carries as big a load as Lampert seems to, this is good advice. 'Stretch Mk 1' Pleases Audience With Antics, Style, Involvement By Jennifer MacAdam DANCE Four men with Australian accents who identified themselves as Bernie, Richard, Alistair and "Dan Quayle" surprised and sometimes shocked the audience that gathered around them Saturday afternoon in Union Station's South Plaza. Collectively known as the street theater group Stretch Mk 1, they gave several performances over the weekend as part of both Australia Week and the first annual "Sweet Rhythms, Wild Beats" world music and dance festival at Union Station. "We don't push the fact that we're from Australia," said one of the performers. "There is only one world; there is The show began even before it started.

While Stretch Mk 1 was setting up, spectators gathered to watch. Aware of their audience, the performers made big productions of things such as putting on a glove. The two performers who take center stage are a cross between street mimes, magicians and stand-up comedians; the other two are musicians who accompany on drums and electric guitar. Their trademark seems to be their use of props. By climbing inside lycra fabric stretched over a pliable, circular frame, they transform themselves into Mummenschanzian creatures: monsters, other-worldly beings, abstract forms.

One shape evolves into another, and, eventually, a story line emerges. Usually the story involves an audience member. Audience volunteers were dragged, kicking and screaming into the mouths of monsters or were used as human shields when two space-age beings dueled. These "volunteers" provided some of the most entertaining moments in the show. As he was pulled to the stage, one of them had a woman's purse caught on his foot.

Once he untangled it, he offered it as ransom for his release. He nearly stole the show. The members of Stretch Mk 1 seemed to know whom to pick on and how to elicit an response. Stretch Mk1 charmed us and gave us the creeps. But they always made us feel something.

Great Guitarists At Playhouse Give An Evening Of Innovation By Louise King ACOUSTIC GUITAR Two of the most innovative acoustic guitarists of this or any era shared the bill during a concert at the Westport Playhouse Saturday. Leo Kottke the influential veteran, and Michael Hedges the young upstart, reprised the roles they played during a similar string of shows several years ago. This time, however, it was Hedges who took the audience for the most exciting journey of the evening. His opening set was like a ride on a roller coaster; Kottke's performance had more of a dreamy, merry-go-round feel to it. And just like a trip to an amusement park, the evening wouldn't have been complete without experiencing both attractions.

Hedges was full of elfin-like energy. He spun in circles and danced in place as he elicited an incredible variety of tones from his six Although he was performing solo, his aggressive style of picking, strumming and pounding on the body of the guitar like a drum at times made it sound as if two or three people were playing. His experimental technique included attacking, hammering and pulling at the strings, sliding up and down the neck of the guitar with his thumb, fingering from both sides of the neck, and pecking away with his fingers like a hummingbird. The result was a wide assortment of moods, from the sedate, contemplative "Silent Anticipations" on which Hedges' classical training rose to the surface, to the untamed, multi-textural "Ritual Dance" from his latest recording, "Taproot." His singing, too, spanned a broad range from sweet and choir-like to raucous to light and humorous. In contrast, Kottke's folksy ways dominated his performance, which was delivered in his usual off-the-cuff manner.

The Jimmy Stewart of acoustic guitarists, he stumbled over his own words in an attempt to deliver typically disjointed monologues on where and how a particular event had inspired his songwriting. Though his stage presence (or lack thereof) endeared him to the crowd, his ability to squeeze out a virtual palette of emotions from his steel string guitar held them spellbound. Highlights of the set included "Regards From Chuck Pink," a fine example of Kottke's fast, but never flashy fingering. Joanne Brackeen Quartet Gives Audience Two Hours Of Variety By Steve Pick JAZZ We don't get many chances in St. Louis to see a regularly working jazz ensemble, but the Joanne Bracken Quartet made a stop at CASA Saturday night as part of a lengthy Midwest tour.

The group, which had native St. Louisan Greg Osby on alto saxophone, Cecil McBee on bass, Tony Reedus on drums and Brackeen on piano, performed for more than two hours, displaying a wide range of influences and ideas. Brackeen, who was once a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, displayed a strongly percussive, fiery attack on the piano. She could play softly, and she could swing through chord changes when she felt like it. She seemed happiest pounding at the keys with a fury and flourish obviously drawn from the style of McCoy Tyner, but with a wholly distinctive melodic touch.

Brackeen writes tricky, intricate compositions, with lots of start-stop rhythms, long rests and wide intervals between notes. When she played a pop standard, such as "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," or "Emily," she focused her romanticism, which was always just beneath the surface on her own songs.

She was playing hard, but she was playing beautifully. Osby's alto sax lined up perfectly with Bracken's piano on her compositions but seemed a bit cerebral for the other material. Osby has a big, rich tone that should be a natural for a warmly romantic pop song, but he couldn't sound completely relaxed when he played them. On the other hand, give him a quirky, funky bit of complexity, and he could sing with the angels on his instrument. I have a reasonably firm rule of thumb that states a concert's value is inversely proportional to the number of bass solos in it, but McBee's playing was a delightful exception.

On a couple of pieces, McBee played the head of the tune, and soloed brilliantly from it, before Brackeen or Osby did much of anything. Reedus is was a fireball behind 1 the drum kit. He specialized in rolls on the snare and tom toms, making his few drums sound like a percussion orchestra. When he let loose on a solo, you'd think the building was about to collapse. But, no matter how much crashing sound he created, his playing was always firmly rooted in solid rhythmic foundations.

LEONARD C. ODELL, 83, who, with his brother, created the early roadside signs for his father's Burma Shave shaving cream, died Friday (Oct. 4, 1991) of cancer in Edina, Minn. Mr. Odell went on to become president of Burma-Vita Co.

In 1963, the company was sold to Phillip Morris Inc. His father, Clinton, launched the business when he commissioned a chemist to develop a brushless shaving cream and named the product Burma Shave. Sales were slow until Odell's sons, Leonard and Allan, posted the first sets of signs on rural highways in Minnesota in 1925. An advertising couplet was written on five sequential signs. A sixth sign always said "Burma Shave." The signs were popular fixtures along U.S.

highways from the late 1930s until 1964. MARTIN ENNALS, 64, the former secretary of Amnesty International who helped buildi into: a leading human rights group, died Saturday (Oct. 5, 1991) in Saskatoon, Canada, after a battle with lung cancer. Mr. Ennals led the development of the group, based in London, as a major international monitor of human rights during his tenure as secretary general from 1968 to 1980.

In 1977, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on Amnesty International's behalf.
