18; Jester, Sept. '19; Don Lash, Sept. 24 7 Tuff Nutz: Hard-Core Rock Band THE sound of Tuff Nutz stems from the band's eclectic tastes. It's a concoction that pays off at the gate. "We draw a real diverse crowd," said guitarist Dan Swarts.

He says that's because the group's sound is as different "as diverse as our haircuts." "We are more hard core and thrash, but we get a lot of crossover from the funk crowd," he said. "We even get some reggae holdouts that show up every once in a while. But we always get good crowds." The band plays originals but occasionally throws in some covers laughs," Swarts said. "We might do songs by Public Enemy, Ice-T, Black Flag, Prong or Slayer." Tuff Nutz also features bassist Jason Van Deman, percussionist Dino Phillips and Stevan Simms on vocals. The group will celebrate Van Deman's birthday with a gig Sept 25 at Kennedy's, 612 N.

2nd St. on Laclede's Landing. The all-ages show will start around 8:30 p.m. Cover is $5 for the under-21 crowd, 2 for those over 21. (421-3655).
