She said that 10-year-old children came closest in one proportion, and people ranging in age from 12 to 20 came out better in another proportion. "But they all were very close," Marshall said. Jonathan Valentino, an eighth grader at Fox Junior High School who lives in South County, also won a divisional prize for his project on the environment. Jonathan, 13, studied the effect of chemical pollutants on brine shrimp. "I found that pesticide In water is the most harmful, and then oil, then herbicide and then ammonia," Jonathan said.

He made graphs to illustrate his findings after testing the pollutants on brine shrimp. "I like working with environmental stuff," he said. "If we don't stop polluting our water, the chemicals will take over and nothing can live In them. We won't be able to use the water for any of our needs. I think we need to find different ways to clean up lakes and the ocean, and find different ways to get rid of trash and pollutants." The fair Is sponsored by Monsanto Co.
