9 i 7 7 7 DEC 1 3 1991 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 13, 1991 4C ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Witnesses Say Coach Fondled Them, Gave Them Injections COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) A Monroe City basketball coach sexually assaulted his junior high school players by fondling them and injecting them with a substance he said would improve their health, witnesses testified Thursday. Joseph Burditt, on trial in Boone County Circuit Court on a change of venue, is charged with five counts of deviate sexual assault involving three teen-age boys during a four-year period ending last year. Witnesses said Burditt had lured some players into weekly sexual encounters and convinced others to accept "medicinal" injections in their buttocks, supposedly to stimulate growth and improve their health.

Burditt, 56, resigned in August, three months after bis arrest following an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. He pleaded innocent to the charges. In court Wednesday, former basketball players now ages 16 to 21 testified Burditt had stimulated or touched their genitals. Two said the sexual contact had taken place after Burditt injected them with a substance purported to be vitamin or an experimental medication. They said Burditt later took semen samples, ostensibly to determine the effectiveness of the injection.

One youth testified that he had been given an injection and asked to provide a semen sample to help a couple have a child. The boy said he had refused and had been forced to quit the team. Witnesses said Burditt had given them lavish gifts, such as stereos, televisions and money. ,.4 rj x- ,7.. iru' 1 immum 4: AP Search In Vietnam U.S.
