White-power concerts work because groups such as the National Alliance and the World Church of the Creator can conduct face-to-face recruiting pitches, Potok said.

"You don't become a Nazi simply by logging onto a Web site or hearing a few lines from a song or playing a version of Doom in which the enemy is black," Potok said. "I think contrary to the impression one would get, recruitment really only happens in a face-to-face setting." Briskman and others said the fact that "Ethnic Cleansing" is available on the Web is particularly disturbing because that makes it easier for the National Alliance to target children, who would otherwise be unlikely to attend racist rock concerts or rallies where racist literature is normally distributed. Selling racist games online is also inexpensive, Briskman said. "A place like Toys 'R' Us is certainly not going to carry it," he said. "No reputable company is going to carry it.

If you try and market it, you're talking about a much bigger operation. So the reality is this is where it's going to be." Pierce said the group has already sold out of the first 2,000 copies of "Ethnic Cleansing." He said that 10,000 more copies are being printed, and the group expects to have sold between 7,000 and 8,000 copies by the end of March for $14.88 each. going to do about these problems when they become adults. We want to get them active. We want to get them involved." Pierce earned a doctorate in physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1962 and later taught physics at Oregon State University.

He said "Ethnic Cleansing" is selling as fast as copies can be printed and packaged. Civil rights advocates and other groups condemned the game. "Obviously, these games are an abomination," said Hugh Price, president of the National Urban League. "I think it shows the ugly potential of modern technology, which has to be monitored very vigilantly." Mark Briskman, director of the Dallas office of the Anti-Defamation League, said that for years racist groups like the National Alliance have used leaflets, music, Web sites and even crude games to recruit But "Ethnic Cleansing" is different, he said. "We thought that this was such a jump in the technology of hate, in how technology is being used in a very negative way to help promote hate, that we wanted to put out a report to indicate that we potentially see a real problem developing," Briskman said.

Some others say that while "Ethnic Cleansing" may be more sophisticated than the clumsy, racist modifications made to older games such as "Doom" and "Escape From Castle Wolfen-stein," games ultimately are ineffective recruiting tools. "I think there's a keen understanding that these kinds of announcements will get attention," said Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has studied the National Alliance. "I would say that vastly more important as a recruiting mecha PeposeVision INSTITUTE www. peposevision Screening: pan. By Victor Godinez The Dallas Morning News DALLAS White supremacist groups are creating sophisticated computer games to package their message of hate and sell it to' teen-agers. "Ethnic Cleansing," the most high-tech game now available, encourages players to kill blacks, Jews and Hispanics as they run through gritty ghetto and subway environments. The final enemy in the game is Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Experts are divided over whether the violent and racist games are serious recruiting tools or nothing more than public rela-" tions gimmicks designed to garner media attention. A recent report by the Anti-Defamation League about the racist games highlighted "Ethnic Cleansing," made by a programmer hired by West Virginia-based National Alliance.

I "Ethnic Cleansing" was released Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. William Pierce, the head of the National Alliance, said the games are recruiting messages aimed at teens. "The game is just a medium for the message," he said.

"We don't accept members under 18 years old, but we think even 15-year-olds can begin thinking about the problems in this country, thinking about what they're Call Today for a Seminar Reservation or Free Consultation 636-728-0111 or Toll-Free 1-877-862-2020 Have you been told that you are not a good LASIK candidate?
