SB Redus (5), Lewis (15), Clayton (5). SF Felder. IP ER BB SO SAN FRANCISCO (AP) And for their fifth consecutive loss, the Pittsburgh Pirates fell victim to a dunk single and a dumb play. The Pirates lost Wednesday after the San Frai-cisco Giants scored two sixth-inning runs one on Matt Williams' dunk single, and one on Andy Van Slyke's dumb play in a 3-1 victory. "Our ballclub has played exceptionally well all year long," Pirates manager Jim Leyland said.

"All of a sudden you lose four or five in a row, and everybody gets nervous. We're not going to get nervous." With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, Will Clark and Cory Snyder hit one-out singles before Williams hit a soft single over third, scoring Clark. "The pitch to Williams was a mistake," Zane Smith said. "It was in, but not in enough." After Chris James was walked intentionally, pinch-hitter Mike Felder and hit a popup to shallow center field. Andy Van Slyke made a running catch 20 feet beyond the infield but hesitated before throwing to the plate, and Snyder scored for a sacrifice fly.

"Your first year in the outfield you're taught to get the ball back into the infield and I didn't do it," Van Slyke said. "It was strictly a mental mistake, and I have to live with it." Snyder faked Van Slyke by pretending to pull up after tagging, then breaking for the plate. "I've never done It before but I've seen it done," Snyder said. "It's an instinctual thing. If he catches the ball and keeps it in his glove, I'm going.

I just caught him off guard." Giants manager Roger Craig said, "To do that to a guy who has won four Gold Gloves and has one of the best arms in the league, that's just great instincts." Bud Black (1-1) scattered four hits in 7 innings and won for the first time in three starts since coming off the disabled list on May 6, striking out four and walking three. DP- Dawson, Chi 10 1, Los Angeles 1. LOB Chicago By Art Spander San Francisco Examiner They arrested Derrel Thomas the other day. The cops showed up in the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant in Southern California and took him in as part of a narcotics sting operation. It was one more heartbreak for Thomas. And for Dorsey High School, his alma mater.

That America is a less tolerant, more violent country has been made painfully apparent at Dorsey, which is located in a part of southwest Los Angeles now seared into our nightmares. The fires of the Rodney King verdict spared the school. The anger did not. USA Today had an article and color photograph of Dorsey students who described their roles in the looting. The piece began on the front page, where too many stories about Dorsey have been of late.

In better days, it seems, they always were on the sports pages. It is a tale told previously. Dorsey alumni were prevalent on major-league rosters. Sparky Anderson graduated from Dorsey. So did Billy Con-solo.

And Don Buford. And Marcel Lachemann, Rene Lachemann, Derrel Thomas and Chili Davis. Tom Seeberg, an Angels executive, went to Dorsey. So did Howard Weitzman, who had planned to be a second baseman but ended up as one of the nation's more famous defense attorneys. So did I.

"I loved it when I went there," said Rene Lachemann, now an A's coach. "A real melting pot school, a place to mix with everybody and to learn. We had great times." They are no longer great. In November 1991, a scheduled football game between Dorsey and Banning was forfeited by Banning because of the threat of gang violence at Jackie Robinson on a city playground adjacent to Dorsey. In March 1992, senior shortstop Wilfred Wright III, playing Russian roulette with one of the guns too readily available, shot himself to death on a bus carrying the baseball team back from a game at Gardena.

And then on April 24, Derrel Thomas, the Dorsey baseball coach who had offered comfort and strength to the team after the shooting, the guy who played 15 seasons in the bigs, was arrested and booked for suspicion of possessing drugs for sale. Thomas is 41. He did not hold a college degree but under the regulations was allowed to coach if assisted and accompanied by a school administrator. He had been hired at Dorsey only last December, a surprise some because of a previous drug-related prdolem. But his brief as sociation had seemed beneficial to both sides.

Beverly Clarkson is an assistant principal at Dorsey. And an optimist. "Derrel Thomas was doing fine," Clarkson said. "He was a good coach, very talented, very structured. In terms of the incident, it will be up to the courts to decide.

We wish him the very best." Thomas was a ballplayer with quick hands and a quicker temper. A black man, he felt mistreated by the white power base. Always he showed his independence. With the Padres, he refused to buckle a seat belt on a flight. With the Giants, he left the bench during a game at Candlestick and cleaned the windows of his car in the players' parking lot.

He touched many lives. Dusty Baker, the Giants' hitting coach, was at first his rival, then his Dodger teammate. "He was a wonderful person," said Baker. "I went to dinner often at his parents' home." Roger Craig, the Giants' manager, was Thomas' manager at San Diego. Thomas played for four of California's five major-league teams.

He also played for the 1986 San Jose Bees. His teammates included Mike Norris and Steve Howe, who also had drug records. The Bad News Bees, they were called. Or, in whispers, the Bad Nose Bees. Thomas searched for a job after baseball.

In 1987, he was hired as manager of the Boise (Idaho) Hawks in the Northwest League. He was gone quickly. When the Hawks' record reached 9-28, the general manager reached for the panic button. "This was my rookie experience," Thomas said at the time, "my educational experience." The education proved worthless. There were no other jobs in organized ball.

Perhaps because there were memories. "I was labeled a troublemaker," Thomas said once. He was also labeled versatile. With the Giants he played every position except pitcher and catcher. With the Dodgers he even caught.

He got into disagreements with teammates, into arguments with fans, having to be restrained from climbing into the grandstand at Candlestick in 1976. He was searching for something he couldn't find. "All my problems," Thomas said once, "were due to immaturity. I wasn't able to cope with everything around me." His problems now are greater than ever. He's charged with trying to buy 22 pounds of cocaine.

"We try to dwell on the positives at Dorsey," said Clarkson. "AM we can do is comment on Derrel Thomas' excellence as coach." She doesn't seem despondent. But I am. los Angeies i. uenzinger (6), nan, NY 480 Thigpen.Chl 11 ON-BASE PCT.
