80 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 1991 REVIEW FILM SUPER HANDYMAN John Candy Soap Spoof Hits Some Wrong Keys By Al Carrell Dear Al: Is there any way to waterproof cardboard packing boxes? To a certain extent, you can waterproof the surface with a coat of wax. Use a spray wax made for furniture or brush on melted wax. You can also get fair waterproofing by just spraying a coat of shellac over the surface. the antiseptic type.

"DELIRIOUS' love interest, plus finding new and different ways to deal with her ruthless, millionaire father (Raymond Burr); her brothers, the Hedison boys; one-eyed amnesia victim Ty (Charles Rocket); diseased preppy Blake (Dylan Baker); and the town's innocent nice girl, Janet Dubois (Mariel Hemingway). The best stuff comes from Candy, who lets himself enjoy playing the dashing, romantic leading man an unlikely stretch given the actor, but one that works to produce some laughs. At one point Jack gets drunk and accidently makes some typos (he refuses to use a computer). So a town's leading citizen is identified as a "well-known socialist" and a bartender comes back with a couple of Rudolphs when he's sent out for "more cold deer." There also is a fair smattering of soap-opera parody, although this summer's earlier soap opera spoof, "Soapdish," did a far better job on that front. Despite Candy's efforts and those of the good supporting cast, especially Hemingway, there are far too many dull, witless stretches that rely on cheap sight gags rather than work from the premise of being able to control destiny with the flick of a typewriter key.

By Ellen Futterman 01 the Post-Dispatch Staff NOT EVEN John Candy, who has a knack for salvaging tedious comedies, can completely save "Delirious" from a banal screenplay about a soap opera writer who finds himself trapped inside the story he has created. While there are some pleasant, even funny, moments, many of the gags are of the "slapschtick" variety, with much too much slap and no real memorable schtick. After getting hit in the head, writer Jack (Candy) wakes up to find himself in Ashford Falls, the fictitious town he created, with the serial's spineless but handsome surgeon Dr.

Paul Kirland (David Rasche, TV's "Sledge standing over him. At first Jack is confused and upset when it seems apparent that he's in a real hospital and not on a studio set. But it doesn't take long for him to realize that the town's residents will follow any and all directions he chooses to write for them. So he decides to make the most of this ability and also live out a few of his fantasies. These include wooing Rachel Hedison (Emma Samms), the soap's nasty girl and the doctor's NOW THRU SUNDAY, AUG.

(Do not use a metal container.) Carefully place the flowers into the pan and gently cover with the powder. It should be deep enough to completely bury the flowers. Store the uncovered container In a warm, dry spot where it won't be disturbed during the drying period. Leave them for about 10 days, then test for dryness.

To do this, insert your finger into the mix and feel to see if the petals are stiff. If not, leave for a few more days. When you remove the flowers, shake them gently. This will remove any mixture still clinging to them. If traces are still left, try using a small artist's paintbrush or makeup brush.

For the best results, use the freshest flowers you can find. Good luck and remember patience is the key. CHOOSE FROM: NICOLE LIFE STRIDE FOOTWORKS MIA SUMI Dear Heloise: When I bought a couch, I forgot to measure it first. In a large showroom, the one I picked looked just right. I didn't realize how large it was.

If I had only thought of taking a tape measure along. I knew the length of the wall, but didn't check the couch. When it was delivered and put into place, it was at least 10 inches too large. I had to send it back. Now I carry a tape measure in my purse.

I won't make that mistake again. Dear Heloise: Could you please tell me how to dry fresh flowers? I know there is something you can buy at the store, but it costs so much I decided to look for a cheaper way. There sure is a cheaper way, and you probably have everything on hand.
