5C SPORTS bl.LUUIS POST-DISPAIUH SATUHUAY, APRIL 25, 1992 HOCKEY BLUES NOTEBOOK ROUNDUP Elik Makes Up For Lost Time As Stars Go Up 3-1 On Wings By The Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Todd Elik, who had missed all but 21 seconds of the National Hockey League playoffs because of sore ribs, deflected the puck past Tim Chevel-dae with 8 minutes 33 seconds to play Friday night, giving the Minnesota North Stars a 5-4 victory and a 3-1 series lead over the Detroit Red Wings. Minnesota can wrap up its second first-round upset in two years when the best-of-seven series resumes in Detroit on Sunday night. The first-place Red Wings finished 28 points ahead of the fourth-place North Stars in the Norris Division standings. The North Stars, who became the first home team to win in the series, also finished fourth last season before stunning Chicago and going on to reach the Stanley Cup finals.

Detroit wasted three goals and an assist from Ray Shep-pard and blew 3-1 and 4-2 leads. The Red Wings faced a similar situation in a 1987 playoff series against Toronto, losing the first two games at home and splitting in Toronto before rallying to win in seven games. Elik's goal was set up by Vladimir Konstantinov's poor clearing pass. Craig Ludwig intercepted at the point and sent a shot toward the net. Elik, standing In front, tipped the puck over Cheveldae.

Cheveldae, benched in Game 3, had replaced Vincent Riendeau at the start of the third period. An intense and wild first period ended with Detroit leading 3-1 and with referee Dan Marouelli calling 16 penalties for 40 minutes. He checked Sergei Federov into Stars goalie Jon Casey, pushed Federov into the ice and knocked off Federov's helmet. With Federov down, Johnson rained punches into the Detroit player's face. Incredibly, Federov received the same 2-minute roughing penalty that Johnson did. As Marouelli assessed penalties, coaches Bryan Murray of Detroit and Bob Gainey of Minnesota yelled at each other from behind their benches. Detroit did get a power play from the melee and Sheppard scored.

Mark Tinordl tied it for Minnesota before Sheppard again beat Casey. Sheppard then set up Steve Chaisson's power-play goal. In the second, the North Stars outscored Detroit 3-1 to make it 4-4. The hard-hitting intensity continued even in the press box, where North Stars Vice President Pat For-ciea dented the wall by throwing a chair after Minnesota failed to convert two good chances in succession. After Mike Modano and Sheppard traded goals, David Shaw and Brian Bellows scored in a 1:53 span late in the second to get the crowd of 15,434 roaring.

By Dave Luecking Of the Post-Dispatch Staff When the Blues drafted defense-man Bret Hedican in 1988, scouting chief Ted Hampson enthusiastically compared his speed to that of a "young Paul Coffey." This was quite a tag to put on a 10th-round choice, but anyone who has seen Hedican in his brief time with the' Blues knows it isn't an exaggeration. Hedican can fly, electrifying Blues fans and surprising Blues' opponents. In Game 3 of the Norris Division semifinals on Wednesday at The Arena, Hedican sped out of his zone on right wing and past the Chicago defense in the neutral zone before cutting to the net for a scoring chance. Dominik Hasek made the save, but Hedican's rush was a rush, even for Blues coach Brian Sutter. "He did something you see a defenseman rarely do," Sutter said.

"He made a rush from the defense along the boards, then drove to the net. "You can have all the speed in the world, but you have to want to go to the net. That's something you can't teach. The speed gets you there, but you have to have the instinct to go all the way." Hedican's arrival the Blues time, I expected to see it one or two more times," Sutter said. "I knew when he brought in Eddie that's what he was doing." A reporter suggested that the next step would have been for Belfour and Hasek to feign injury, so Chicago could bring Jimmy Waite out of the press box.

"I thought about that, too," Sutter said. "Nothing surprises me." Sutter made one lineup change for Game 4, inserting tough-guy Kelly Chase in Darin Kimble's spot on right wing. In addition to Kimble, the Blues scratched defensemen Cavallini, Baron and Norwood, left wingers Denny Felsner and Dave Mackey and goalie Pat Jablonski. Norwood, Felsner, Mackey and Jablonski have not appeared in the series. Keenan made four lineup changes.

On defenseman, Bryan Marchment and Cam Russell replaced Frantisek Kucera and Rod Buskas. At forward, Stu Grimson and Brad Lauer replaced Tony Hrkac and Tony Horacek. Chicago's only other scratches were Waite and defenseman Adam Bennett. Greg Gilbert (knee), Dan Vincelette (knee) and Michel Goulet (groin) missed their fourth playoff game with injuries. signed him after the Winter Olympics has further crowded the Blues' defense.

Hedican is playing ahead of Paul Cavallini, Murray Baron and Lee Norwood, the Blues' regular left de-fensemen most of the season. "I can tell you one thing: The six guys who were here all year got awfully spoiled," Sutter said. "No matter what happened, you had to keep playing them because that's all you had for two-thirds of the year. "We have some tough decisions to make every night now. We have to look at how the six guys fit into the overall picture.

You want one guy on the ice at all the times with puck control. It's very important. Speed is important." That's where Hedican comes in. "He gives you a lot of speed and puck control," Sutter said. "He gets you out of trouble in a hurry." Sutter expects the unexpected when Chicago coach Mike Keenan is on the other bench.

Thus, he wasn't the least bit surprised when Keenan made four goalie changes in a 2-min-ute span in the first period of Game 3. Keenan replaced started Dominik Hasek with Ed Belfour, then replaced Belfour with Hasek, repeating the process two more times. "When he pulled Hasek the first STARS 5, WINGS 4 Detroit 3 1 04 Minnesota 1 3 15 First Period 1, Detroit, Sheppard 2 (Chiasson. Carson), 3:48 (pp). 2, Minnesota, Tinordi 1 (Gagner, Dahlen), 7:05.

Now, it was the Blues' turn to take the penalties. Zombo went off for elbowing Steve Larmer at 8:18, and just 25 seconds after the Blues killed that, Philippe Bozon was called for a costly hooking penalty at 10:43. Joseph made a stick save on Roen-ick's wrap around shot, but Bob Bas-sen inadvertently kicked the rebound past Joseph on the far side, tying the score 1-1 at 11:29.

Marchment came out worse in a fight with Kelly Chase at 10:54, not only losing the fight but coming out of it with an additional two-minute minor penalty. Again, Chicago killed the penalty as Belfour stopped a Brown shot from the point and Bozon's wrap-around. Moments later, Bozon took a costly hooking penalty. This time, Brent Sutter deflected between Joseph's legs a shot by Steve Smith from the point, giving Chicago a 2-1 lead. Matteau made it 3-1 early in the second period.

With Noonan off four minutes for high-sticking and roughing, Janney carried the puck into the Blues' zone and dropped a pass to Emerson. The puck deflected off Dirk Graham's skate to Matteau, who was behind the Blues' defense. Matteau skated in on Joseph and snapped a wrist shot between Joseph's pads at 1:27. Chicago outshot the Blues 9-1 in the first half of the period, and only some stellar play from Joseph kept the Blues within striking range. Brown jostled the Blues from their sleep at 9:15, cross-checking the hardworking Bozon along the end boards for the first of four consecutive Chicago penalties.

Belfour gloved Bret Hedican's shot from the left wing and let Zombo's shot from the right point bounce off his chest as Chicago killed the penalty, but another penalty was soon to follow. McCreary caught Brent Sutter upending brother Ron behind the play, giving him an interference penalty at 13:35. Earlier, the Sutter boys had been sent off for slashing at each other's sticks, but this time, McCreary missed whatever Ron did to upset his brother. Ron remained on the ice and set up the ensuing power-play goal by Curt Giles. Sutter took Nelson Emerson's pass along the right boards and slid a pass to Giles at the point.

Giles low shot rolled just past Bel-four's pad for his first playoff goal, cutting Chicago's lead to 3-2 at 14:57. Less than a minute later, Noonan pounded Zombo into the end boards, and McCreary called it charging at 15:40. Just 1:17 later, Shanahan called It a 3-3 tie. Game 6 will be Tuesday at The Arena, and Game 7, if necessary, Thursday at Chicago Stadium. The loss cost the Blues the momentum they had gained Wednesday during the Midnight Special, their hard-fought 5-4 double-overtime victory in Game 3, won on Brett Hull's goal six minutes before midnight. Chicago was supposed to be demoralized after the defeat, with the players supposedly tired of coach Mike Keenan and perhaps easy-pickings for the Blues in Game 4. Not so. Chicago came out jumping taking a 3-1 lead before the two-minute mark of the second period.

Only a penchant for taking bad penalties disrupted the Blackhawks on this night. The Blues' scored twice on power plays in the second period to tie the game. In fact, all three of the Blues' goals were scored with the man-advantage, which they had 10 times in the game. Chicago, meanwhile was two of four with the man-advantage and scored another goal short-handed. Hull and Brendan Shanahan each had a goal and an assist, setting up the other's goal.

Curt Giles also scored for the Blues and Nelson Emerson added two assists. Jeremy Roenick and Brent Sutter scored Chicago's power-play goals in the first period. Stephane Matteau also scored a the short-handed goal. Keith Brown had two assists. In eerie coincidence, Chicago goalie Ed Belfour returned to the net after a one game absence, two years to the day after his first playoff start.

It was a momentum-changing 3-2 victory over the Blues in Game 4 of the Norris Division final, won by Chicago in seven games. This one wasn't as much work. The Blues managed only 19 shots at Belfour four in the first period, eight in the second and seven in the third. Chicago outshot the Blues 37-19, not bad for a team that was supposed to be down and out. The Blackhawks jumped in the Blues early and were relentless in their pursuit, only to neutralize their attack with some bad penalties.

Referee Bill McCreary caught Brad Lauer elbowing Garth Butcher 59 seconds into the game, and Noonan took a high-sticking penalty at 6:12. Chicago killed Lauer's penalty without allowing a shot, and by the time Noonan got his penalty, the Blackhawks had outshot the Blues 5-0. Belfour stopped a rocket by Hull from the right circle on the Blues' first shot on goal, but he couldn't get the second. Some brisk passing by the Blues opened the ice for Hull on the left wing, and he sneaked in to tap in Brindan Shanahan's pass at 7:44. aluminum mulching deck Rear or side catcher and Rear or side catcher and leaf shredder fflET 1T0NIGHT8PM leaf shredder attachments attachments optional optional faf mm vww WORLD WRESTLING i i 1 1, iii ft ii i -t-i i i Mil ii I'M'lilifl FEDERATION9 ST.
