The girls presented their work at the fair Monday. A lot of girls drop out of the sewing division.

"But they haven't lost, because they've already learned to sew," Stamberger says. Tumivall says she wants to keep on sewing, and wants to move on to making more complicated outfits. She likes to work with cottons, because they are the easiest material to work with; her jumper is a cotton knit. She also has made a bag and shorts. "I like being able to make whatever I want and not having to settle for what's in the stores," she says.

"And I just like doing it." Haley Harding, 10, is modeling a purple, black, red and yellow flowered skirt that she made. Like Turnivall, she became interested in sewing through her mother and grandmother. A Rochester resident, TTarclIrig also has made a white skirt with hearts on it and a brown skirt with peach flowers. "When you make it, you get to pick the material and decide what it will look like," she says. When Stacey Walsh first began sewing for 4-H projects six years ago, it was because her mother made her do it.

But eventually, she began to get interested in it. On Monday, she was modeling a mint green satiny nightgown and robe. Usually, though, she works with cotton, in reds, black and navy. She likes to make "anything I can wear to school." Walsh, 15, who lives outside Rochester, has made jumpers and skins. By making her own clothes.

Walsh says she can save quite a bit of money. "You can design what you want to, and you can choose the fabrics and colors," she says. Shooting Continued From Page A1 Erickson, 33, a former police trainee in Hoffman Estates, 111., who resigned after receiving poor performance ratings, then cooly tried to divert the attention of an approaching court security officer by again pointing toward Frakes. The officer, 58-year-old Harry Belluomini, didn't buy it, investigators said, and advanced toward Erickson. Erickson shot him in the chest.

Derrick Thomas, a banker in Chicago's Loop who was in the for his fiance when he saw the shooting take place, said he was not more than 10 feet away as the bullets started flying. Thomas said Erickson shouted: "I'm going to jail. I'm going to jail. I'm die anyway. I'm going to take everybody with me." Erickson then ran up a ramp toward the street, but stopped about 15 feet outside the garage entrance when security guards at the top of the ramp cornered him.
