NEW YORK Futures on the local Cotton Exchange soared a dollar a bale In active dealings today. A vigorous rally was started after the opening call which carried prices forward. The undertone of the market was strong and sentiment was very friendly.

A wave of buying orders which came mostly from commission and wire houses swept over the list and carried futures to the high levels of the day with the more active months up $1.25 bale. Switching continued, especially between December and May and December and March. Hedging, which was fairly heavy in early dealings tapered off. The irregular trend of the stock market attracted little attention in most quarters as cotton aggressively moved up. The Fossick Ginnings estimate of 11,900,000 bales was construed as rather bullish as the total was about 250,000 bales less than for the same period in the previous year.

IT MIGHT have happened at the Duquesne Club or, perhaps, the Union or Pittsburgh club, or. the Chamber of Commerce. Anyway, it as a place where the presidents of about all the Where Leading prominent down-Bankers Meet town banking institutions as well other executives, whose names are a household word in finance and Industry, here gather daily for luncheon. And It really did happen, let the shoe fit whom it may. Not so long ago a party of bank xecutives (and others) had gathered about a "certain round table" at "the" club, for luncheon.

And one man was scheduled to pay for the crowd (an election bet, or something to that effect; or football). "Boys," said one of the leading spirits evidently not the loser of the bet, if such was the case "we may go just as far as we like, for It isn't costing us a cent, you know." "That's right; so it isn't," remarked another, as he nudged his tiext-door neighbor slyly in the ribs, accompanied by a wink. Just as sly. It may be explained that his "That's right; so it isn't" is not to be taken as possessing an ambiguous meaning as might appear on the surface but that what was understood by the group was that It wasn't costing any of the members with the exception of the prospective "payer" a red cent. Just here, though, the latter who is noted for his deeply sonorous voice boomed, so that all could hear: "Say, you fellows, don't go reading from right to left on that menu.

Take it from left to right." What he meant was the prices ere on the right, and that the "boys" were planning to eat backwards, according to price, so it would cost him more. OF COURSE, such a "go-getter" hardly could be associated with any of the more important investment banking firms in Pittsburgh. No that he couldn't! Not at all! This One Snre Nevertheless, the Was idea may be of use to some of those who always seem to be seeking new clients. So we will pass it along, with the permission of the "victim." It seems Ralph Lewando concert violinist and teacher resides at 121 Elysian Point Breeze district. And Frances Gould Lewando, teacher of singing with several contest-winning pupils to her credit also resides at the same number, bo this hardly could be construed as an advertisement, which it isn't, as each has about as many pupils as each would care to handle, "they" aay.

Likely, both have been tolerably Successful in a financial way, also. For, one day, not so very long ago, Mrs. Lewando was coming to town to deposit some Liberty bonds in her bank. She had them in an envelope, with her name on it in conspicuous letters. HER BUSINESS consumated, Mrs.

Lewando returned to her teaching. But the very text day there came a dapper young man (it seems always they are to Eut He Failed the door of the In His Mission, home and studios, inquiring for Mrs. liewando.
