HARRISBURG The first motor vehicle stopped by state highway patrolmen near this city Saturday, because there was no inspection tag on its windshield was a Steelton borough-owned truck.

The driver said he had not had time to have it inspected. All day Capt. W. C. Price, head of the highway patrol, was answering telephone calls from car owners who protested because they had been arrested for non-compliance with the law.

They gave various excuses for not having the sticker on their cars, some contending they had never heard there was such a requirement. There are no adequate reports showing the number of arrests, Price said. The fact the driver of a car is not its owner does not relieve him from arrest and the $10 penalty. The law says it is illegal to drive a car 30 days after the inspection period without the approved inspection sticker on the windshield. Cars from other states, no matter how much in need of inspection, are exempt under the law while driving in Pennsylvania.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. As often is the case. William Hoffman's daily good deed netted him only grief. Bill is a butcher and he was diligently wielding his cleaver when he noticed a squirrel peeking in the window of his shop.

He dropped his cleaver and went in pursuit of the little animal. Over eight fences went the squirrel and over eight fences went Bill. He picked up some clods of dirt to throw at the animal and aroused the ire of neighboring housewives when his clods soiled the weekly wash. When the squirrel entangled itself in some chicken wire Bill was the recipient of deep scratches as he removed the animaL He took the squirrel home, where it escaped and hid in a hole in the ceiling. Bill had his face scratched and his nose bitten when he peered in the hole.

Hoffman attached a hose to the gas stove and turned the gas into the hole in the ceiling. In a few minutes the squirrel dropped to the floor and was put in a box. Fresh air and the animal was soon revived. And then Bill and the squirrel went for a ride in Bill's car, a ride which took them to Tower Grove Park, where the butcher released the animal which scampered for a tree, perched on a high limb, and chattered insultingly at BUL But Bill refused to draw a moral from the story and is satisfied that he saved the little animal from the perils of the city's streets. 17,533 1,063 911 Socialist JURY COMMISSIONERS 77,473 LADY'S CROYDON SPORT WATCH .70 White chromium case plain or engraved.

WASHINGTON The nation's crime bill will be the subject of an extensive inquiry by the National Law Enforcement Commission, it is announced here.

The inquiry will delve into the varied forms of "racketeering," fraudulent stock sales schemes and defalcations from banks and other institutions, it was said. The cost of crime prevention, including the expense of maintaining police departments, also will be considered. Goldthwaite Dorr, a former assistant U.S. attorney, is to conduct the inquiry, under direction of Judge Paul J. McCormick, a member of the commission.

Crime cost estimates have placed the annual bill in the United States at more than $3,000,000,000. It is hoped the inqiury will reveal what forms of crime account for most of this total. A MAYOR.
