Margaret Ty-zack, in the same play, won for best featured, or supporting, actress. Charles Durning, Big Daddy in the revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," won the best featured actor Tony. "The Grapes of Wrath," an adaptation by Frank Galatl of the novel about Dust Bowl farm workers in the 1930s, also won a directing Tony for Galatl. "City of Angels" a jazzy production set in 1940s Hollywood, picked up the best actor prize for James Naughton, the show's hard-boiled detective.

The musical also won awards for featured actress, Randy Graff as a love-starved secretary; best book, Larry Gelbart; score, composer Cy Tyne Daly, formerly of television's "Cagney and Lacey," was named best actress in a musical as the brassy stage mother Mama Rose in "Gypsy," a role originated by Ethel Merman 30 years ago. The show also won as best revival. Robert Morse won as best actor in a play for his portrayal of writer Truman Capote in "Tru." Morse's competition included Charles S. Dutton in "The Piano Lesson" and Dustin Hoffman as Shylock in "The Merchant of Venice." "I'm just so grateful to be back here," said Morse, who last won a Tony in 1962 for "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Maggie Smith won as best actress Coleman and lyricist David Zippel; and set design, Robin Wagner. Jack Gilford; Acted On Stage, iTV, In Movies NEW YORK (AP) Jack Gilford, the droopy-faced actor whose 55-year career ranged from vaudeville to tele-r vision and included hit roles in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" and the "Cocoon" movies, died Monday (June 4, 1990) of cancer. He was 81.

Mr. Gilford died at his home in Greenwich Village about 8 a.m., said Merle Debuskey, a family friend and publicist. His wife of 41 years, actress-writer Madeline Lee, was with him. Mr. Gilford had worked until recently in television and movies and did a live standup-comedy routine two years ago at The Ballroom, a New York cabaret.

Mr. Gilford's face and raspy voice with a distinctly New York accent known to audiences of several generations. To stage aficionados, Mr. Gilford was Hysterium, the slave who ends up in drag in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," or Herr Shultz in "Cabaret." He collected Tony nominations for both roles. Mr.

Gilford played the quintessential garment manufacturer In the 1970s movie "Save the Tiger," which earned him an Academy Award nomi-'. nation for supporting actor. More re- Man Pleads Innocent In Slaying Of Boy, Sex Assault Of 3 Girls was set for Aug. 20. Johnson is being held without bond in the stabbing death of Donald Lee Buske, 11, and the criminal sexual assaults of the three girls.

Authorities said Donald was slain and the girls were attacked when Johnson returned to the boy's house Jack Gilford Career spanned 5 decades cent audiences know him as the elderly man who decided against being rejuvenated by aliens in "Cocoon" and "Cocoon II." Born Jacob Gellman and raised in Brooklyn, Mr. Gilford's first Broadway role was in "They Shoulda Stood in Bed." Other Broadway triumphs included "No, No Nanette," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "The Tenth Man," "The World of Sholom Aleichem" and "Romanoff Juliet." Among the survivors are three children: Lisa, of Denver; Joseph, of New York; Samuel, of Montague, and two grandchildren, Max and Molly. 31 Perish As Boat Sinks Off Mozambique after baby-sitting the children there the previous night. Johnson was found at the house after the incident with stab wounds that apparently were self-inflicted. He was hospitalized for two days and then was moved to the County Jail at Hillsboro.

Members of Donald's family said that Johnson had baby-sat the children previously and that Johnson was a friend of the family. They said they had no idea what caused the attack. The crimes have shocked residents of Litchfield, a usually quiet community of 7,200 about 55 miles northeast of St. Louis. Lenard Johnson, 37, of Litchfield, 111., pleaded innocent Monday to all six charges against him in the killing of a boy, 1 1, and the sexual assaults of three girls.

In an arraignment in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Hillsboro, 111., Johnson entered the pleas and waived his right to a jury trial on the charges. A bench trial will be scheduled later. Circuit Judge E.C. Eberspacher also granted a defense motion for a psychiatric evaluation of Johnson. The attacks happened May 12 at the boy's home in Litchfield.

A pretrial conference in the case MAPUTO, Mozambique (AP) An overcrowded boat sank off the northern coast of Mozambique, and at least 31 people died, the AIM news agency reported Monday. Thirty people were known to have survived when the boat sank Saturday in the Bay of Pemba, AIM said.
