Patton, a retired urologist who spent much of his career in the Army, died Sunday (Nov. 18, 1990) at Mari De Villa retirement center in Manchester after a brief illness. He was 87. Dr. Patton was born in Albany, Mo.

After graduating from Washington University School of Medicine in 1928, he served there for four years as assistant professor in the urology department. In World War II, he served in the Army as chief of surgical services of the 21st General Hospital, a reserve Patton unit of Washington University. He was in private practice for several years in St. Louis before and after the war. In 1950, Dr.

Patton was appointed the first urology consultant from the American Urological Association to the surgeon general of the Army. As a result, he accepted a permanent appointment in the regular Army, where he was stationed at various medical posts in this country and in Europe. He was chief of urology from 1957- 1959 at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Victor A. Vaccarezza, Victor A. "Vic Vac" Vaccarezza, a retired art director at the old GlobeDemocrat and a well-known cartoonist, died Sunday (Nov.

18, 1990) at a nursing home in Prescott, after a long illness. He was 93. Mr. Vaccarezza began his career in 1916 with the old St. Louis Republic newspaper, after graduating from the St.

Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. About 10 years later, he joined the Globe-Democrat as a staff artist. His work took on a new phase in 1950 when he produced a cartoon event for the color cover of the newspaper's Sunday Magazine. As a result of the success of that cover and many others, they became known simply as "Vic Vacs." Mr. Vaccarezza's work was often reprinted in other magazines, donated to the Camelot auction and presented Washington and later served as chief of the department of surgery there.

After retiring from the Army as a colonel in 1963, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri at Columbia as professor of urological surgery. He retired from there in 1972 and returned to St. Louis in 1983. Besides contributing to more than 70 articles on urology in various scientific publications, Dr. Patton served as editor of "History of Urology During World War II," a volume published for the historical unit of the Army.

He was a past president of the Excelsior Surgical Society, a past vice chairman of the urology section of the Southern Medical Association, a past vice president of the St. Louis Medical Society and a former member of the executive board of the St. Louis Surgical Society. He was also a member of numerous medical, historical and social organizations. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m.

Friday at Ladue Chapel Presbyterian Church, 9450 Ladue Road, Ladue. The body will be cremated. Among the survivors are two sons, John F. Patton III of Wayland, Mass. and James L.

Patton of Berkeley, and a grandchild. Memorial contributions may be made to the John R. Caulk Fund for the Advancement of Urology at Washington University School of Medicine or to the Boys Town of Missouri, St. James, Mo. 93; Was Cartoonist to the Missouri Historical Society.

Amour Krupnick, assistant managing editor of graphics at the Post-Dispatch, worked with and learned from Mr. Vaccarezza. Krupnick said Monday, "He was the most outstanding cartoonist in our area. You could spend hours studying the detail of his work." Mr. Vaccarezza continued with the Globe-Democrat for 50 years before he retired in 1976 as art director and chief cartoonist.

He was born in St. Louis and lived here for most of his life until he moved to Prescott in 1981. He served in the Navy in World War I. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery in St.

Louis. Among the survivors are a son, Victor A. Vacc of Prescott, and two grandchildren. Harry Monroe; Policeman, Baseball Player Harry Monroe, a retired St. Louis police officer and professional baseball player, died Friday (Nov.

16, 1990) after a brief illness following surgery at Jewish Hospital. He was 81 and lived in north St. Louis. Mr. Monroe was reared in St.

Louis and played in old Negro League in the 1930s with the old St. Louis Giants, St. Louis Stars and Pittsburgh Crawfords. Mr. Monroe quit playing baseball in 1940 and joined the St.

Louis Police Department. He patrolled the old 9th and 10th precincts and left the department in 1956 to take a job as a supervisor of several area parking lots. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wade's Funeral Home, 4828 Natural Bridge Avenue. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens, in north St.

FIRES St. Louis: Florence Harris, 49, was in satisfactory condition Monday at Barnes Hospital after she jumped out of a second-floor window of her burning home at 5887 Cabanne Avenue about 3:15 a.m. Harris injured her back and also cut her hand in the incident. Three other people also jumped out of second-story windows, but none was seriously injured. The cause of the fire, which heavily damaged the single-family home, was undetermined.
