The edict could be lifted today after readings are taken by the Johnstown Water Authority. About customers were affected by the ruling.

Officials of Laurel Management, which operates the water system, told customers Tuesday to boil water used for drinking and cooking. Jack Sloan, president of the company, said heavy rains Monday and Tuesday caused the water to be dirtied. Sloan said drinking the water without boiling it could cause diarrhea and nausea. Runoff from the storm should increase the reservoirs' water levels and reduce turbidity fairly quickly, he said. Memorial Hospital used a gallon tanker to supply water for drinking and cooking.

The hospital also bought bottled water and four tons of ice, said hospitals spokeswoman Jayne Huston. "We have set up our own internal water company," Huston said.
