Folks at the (self-described) conservative Media Research Center (MRC) snort back that the news imbalance assuming one exists is more than offset by the overwhelming liberal bent of most TV entertainment. The MRC just came out with a list of what its analysts considered the 10 most liberally biased TV shows of the 1990-91 season. Among them were such notoriously subversive shows as "MacGyver" and "A Different World." This is not a joke. It is an illustration of the old saw about truth and the eye of the beholder. I've always thought "MacGyver" was kind of refreshing because the title, character, played by Richard Dean Anderson, is a compassionate guy who uses scientific ingenuity, rather than the guns favored by most action heroes, to save the day.

But MRC Chairman L. Brent Bo-zell III says the long-running ABC series is pure liberal propaganda. "Everything MacGyver does revolves around the left's agenda on the environment, gun control and foreign affairs," he writes. "Moreover, the show's creators frequently turn to the liberal Center to Prevent Handgun Violence for consultation." To Bozell, "A Different World," NBC's sitcom about a predominantly black college, is "always promoting a left-wing agenda. One episode attacked U.S.

policy on the Gulf War, while another touted the separatist, white-hating Black Muslims; another claimed there are 4 million homeless in America a figure that exaggerates, seven- or eightfold, the estimate yielded by rational studies." I don't suppose it would cut much slack with Bozell to note that "A Different World" is about as militant as milk and cookies compared with any of Spike Lee's films not when Bozell dismisses concern for America's homeless on the grounds that there are only half a million of them. Other shows zapped by the MRC were CBS' "The Trials of Rosie O'Neill" every episode has some liberal statement to make on NBC's "L.A. Law" tentative steps toward establishing a lesbian relationship between two regular CBS' "Murphy Brown" season's targets included Oliver and the ABC Afters-chool Specials, installments of which dealt with birth-control information for teens and whether First Amendment protections should extend to suggestive song lyrics. Far and away the most insidious offender in the MRC's view was "Captain Planet and the Plane-teers," TBS' animated series about a band of teen-age crime fighters who bust polluters. While organizations such as Action for Children's Television worry about kids being bombarded with commercials for war toys and unhealthful foods, the MRC's Bozell frets that "Captain Planet" will "indoctrinate children and scare them into leftist political activism.

Episodes have featured leftist slants to disproved theories such as overpopulation and acid rain as well as Ted Turner's distorted, cob-webbed view on unilateral disarmament. Ironically, given the Soviet 'Union's horrifying nuclear safety record, a Soviet youth is depicted as the most cerebral Plane-teer in the cartoon." What was it they used to say in the McCarthy era? Better dead than Ted? The MRC hasn't released a list of the 1990-91 programs it found most laudable, but something tells me it would include "Wall Street Week," "COPS," Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf's press briefings and anything in which Whitney Houston sang the national anthem. Tom Berenger MOVIES Tom Berenger is a married police detective who falls in love with a beautiful socialite he is assigned to protect iit "Someone To Watch Over Me." Mimi Rogers is trie socialite who has witnessed a murder, thus putting her life in danger. Channel 4 The heroine has the family utge to leap tall buildings and fight nasty criminals, such as Faye Dunaway, in "Supergirl." Helen Slater plays Superman's teen in pulpy 1984 movie.

Freeman "He is a Communist." Is the word Communist always capitalized? It is capitalized when the reference is to a specific sense, as in the example, or to the Communist Party. It is not capitalized when used in a general sense: "He subscribes to communist doctrines." "His votes favor communistic causes." What guidelines would you suggest to ensure the proper placement of adverbs? Place all adverbs modifying adjectives or other adverbs immediately before the words they modify. Place an adverb that modifies a verb anywhere in the sentence if the placement occasions no awkwardness. 6PM 6:30 7PM 7:30 8PM 8:30 9PM I 9:30 I 10PM I 10:30 11 PM I 11:30 News Roggin Heroes TMoung Riders rnffTw News A Current Affair Extra Taxi News Fortune Hunt LEO Someone to Watch Over Me" Doctor, Doctor Good Sports News Star Trek: Next Generation Gladiators News WheelFortune Amen Amer. East's double was more a matter of high dudgeon than any conviction that the slam could be defeated.

Since it was obvious that North-South were bidding on distribution rather than power, West led a trump in an effort to cut down on possible ruffs. It was an intelligent choice, but not enough to defeat the contract. Declarer won with dummy's nine as East followed, and immediately ruffed a spade high. A heart to the king was followed by another spade ruffed high, and the eight of diamonds was overtaken with the ten to permit declarer to ruff a spade with the king of trumps as West discarded a heart. All of dummy's spades were now established.

Declarer crossed to the table with a club ruff, cashed the ace of trumps to draw the last trump and the ace of spades to remove the defenders' last card in that suit. Dummy was left with nothing but winners and the doubled grand slam had rolled home with only 22 high-card points in the combined holding. Opening lead: Seven of There are players who have never bid and made a grand slam, some because of a reluctance to risk the considerable bonus awarded a small slam, others because they never held the cards. Grand slams, however, are not that uncommon, but to bid and make a grand slam after your opponents have opened the bidding is a rare bird indeed.

South's two diamonds was a weak jump overcall. Usually, this action is taken with a six-card suit, but at this vulnerability it is not unknown for practitioners to take some liberties. North thought it highly likely that South held no more than one spade, and decided to play a grand slam if partner held both the king and queen of diamonds.
