nn 1 0 Is the Faculty SIUE's Mission Extends IUE students benefit from working closely with faculty who teach both undergraduate and graduate classes. Beyond the Classro Seventy-four percent of SIUE faculty hold the highest degree available in their field (usually the Ph.D.). Faculty' are engaged in significant research, and many others provide consulting services to organizations throughout the United States and in other nations. Their research and first-hand knowledge enrich the classroom experience of all SIUE students. Regional economic development has been a major SIUE emphasis during the 12 years of President Earl Lazerson's administration.

The University has become a vital partner in Southwestern Illinois' contributions toward transforming the Greater St. Louis Area into an education, transportation, business, industrial, technological, communication and cultural hub of the Midwest. President Lazerson also is chairman of the City of East St. Louis Financial Advisory Authority appointed in 1990 by Governor Thompson, and he served as chairman of the Illinois Department of Transportation Advisory committee for the extension of Interstate 255 (FAP 413) to the Alton-Godfrey area.
