Paterno UNIVERSITY PARK The course load of Penn State's football players becomes heavier this week. Joe Paterno has added History 911 and plans to till the section to overflowing. With ten victories this fall, including Saturday's pulsating 24-19 win at Notre Dame, Penn State is within reach of a second conseuctive undefeated regular season and their 22nd consecutive regular season victory over the past two years. Standing in the way of those twin achievements is the Lions' oldest rival, the Pitt Panthers, a team they have met 85 times in a rivalry that stretches all the way back to 1893. Pitt was the last team to defeat Penn State in a regular season outing, which will probably come up in the first lecture of History 911.

That was in 1984 when the Panthers did a 31-11 number on the Lions at Beaver Stadium. This is the seventh time that a Paterno-coached Penn State team has reeled off 10 straight games. Six of the previous teams have finished 11-0. The exception is the 1971 club, which tell at Tennessee 31-11 in 1971 finale. Then there's the matter of what happened just last week when secondranked Michigan was stunned at home 20-17 by heavy underdog Minnesota and Texas was dumped by Arkansas 14-10.

In other words, there is plenty of course material for Paterno as he prepares his squad for Saturday's showdown with the Panthers, who need a victory themselves to finish with a winning season for first-year coach Mike Gottfried. Pitt stopped a two-game losing streak Saturday with 20-6 victory over Rutgers at Pitt Stadium. 441 told the squad 'you beat a great team Paterno said in his post-game remarks after last weekend's win at Notre Dame. We beat a great team away from home in tough stadium and that's what you've got to do to win a national championship.

Miami drew 47 first-place votes, with 49 of the 50 coaches participating.

If Penn State, 10-0, wins its traditional rivalry against Pittsburgh Saturday, and Miami, 10-0, triumphs as expected against East Carolina Nov. 27, the top two teams will play in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl Jan. 2 for the UPI Coaches Trophy emblematic of the national championship. (tie) Georgia (7-3) 10 z-unranked Montana Passes For 441 Yards, But 49ers Lose By WILL DUNHAM UPI Sports Writer WASHINGTON (UP1) Joe Montana and the San Francisco 49ers, who amassed 441 yards passing and 501 total yards against the Washington Redskins, have only frustration to show for their efforts. Montana, in his second game since returning from major back surgery Sept. 15, established personal and club records for passing yardage and passes attempted, could not direct his team into the end zone Monday night. Washington won, 14-6, on the strength of a 27-yard touchdown pass from Jay Schroeder to Gary Clark and a 1-yard scoring run by George Rogers. The Redskins, who were outgained by 235 yards, improved to 9-2 and maintained a share of the lead in the NFC East with the New York Giants, two games abead of the Dallas Cowboys.

The 49ers fell to 6-4-1, a half-game behind the 7-4 Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West. "It's very frustrating and unbelievable that we got all that yardage and couldn't get it in the end zone," said Jerry Rice, who caught a career-high 12 passes for 204 yards. "It seems every time we got going, we were penalized." "There were certain passes "I that missed," Montana said. don't know if 1 was rusty, I felt more tired. They played us tough when we got down to the goal-line areas." Montana completed 33 of 60 passes, but threw three interceptions two the Washington 31 and fumbled once to set up Washington's score.

Montana had held the team records for passing attempts and yardage, attempting 57. passes and throwing for 429 yards Oct. 6, 1985 against the Atlanta Falcons. The 49ers were assessed 110 yards 00 club-record 15 penalties, breaking the previous mark of 14 set three different times, in a game that lasted three hours and 55 minutes, finishing shortly after 1 a.m. EST.

Montana became the first quarterback is NFL history to throw for 400-plus yards and not bave his team score a touchdown. He also became the second NFL quarterback to throw for more thas 400 yards but not complete scoring pass. Last Monday night, Cleveland's Bernie Kosar threw for 401 yards but 40 TD: Dist. Facing a first and goal situation at the Lion sta with one minute remaining, Notre Dame registered five yards forward and 12 yards backward in the game's climactic serles. Quarterback John Shaffer directed three touchdown drives and put 24 points on the board, the Lions best scoring performance in a month. thought Shaffer probably had one of the best games he's ever Paterno said. "'He took a sack but don't know whether he made mistake after that. Shaffer attempted just passes but completed nine of them for 162 yards and one touchdown.

The scoring pass was Shatter's ninth of the season and gives him a personal single season high in nine this fall. His previous best was eight in 1985. Shaffer also rushed for one touchdown, pushing in from the one to climax a drive of 56 yards in nine plays that opened up a 24-13 Lion lead with 12:10 remaining in the game. Receiver Ray Roundtree was the big play man three! offense for Penn State with receptions for 95 yards. The yardage total la the best by a Lion receiver in a game this tall and the tops of Roundtree's Penn State career.

He recorded 70 yards against West Virginia a year ago, his best single game effort previously. Roundtree caught a 37-yard scoring pass that brought Penn State from 13-10 deficit in the third period, his first TD reception for the season and the third of his career. He also caught a 34-yard toss from Shaffer in the Lions' first scoring drive and a 24- yarder that got Penn State rolling on its final TD march. Tight end Brian Siverling was also featured prominently in the pass offense for the third consecutive week. the senior from North East caught four for 40 yards.

Siverling has made 13 receptions in the last three weeks. A knee injury in practice cast some doubt over the availability of Lion tailback D. J. Dozier but the Penn State tailback eased the concerns with 77 yards on 17 carries to push his rushing total past 700 yards for the third time in four Penn State seasons. Dozier now has 734 yards, a figure topped only by his freshman statistics of 1,002 yards on 174 tries.

There were heroes aplenty for the Lion defense but one of the unfamiliar ones was backup corner Gary Wilkerson, in the lineup for the injured Eddie Johnson. In a game of big plays, none loomed larger than Wilkerson's end zone breakup of a Steve Beuerlein pass for tight end Joel Williams. Wilkerson hit Williams as the ball arrived, turning what could have been the winning touchdown into a harmless incompletion. "Gary Wilkerson's got tremendous ability," Paterno said. "'He was in a tough game today and he rose to the occasion.

He's a big league prospect." The defense also caused a pair of turnovers that led to all ten of Penn State's first half points. Linebacker Don Graham, who also had a pair of quarterback sacks, forced an ND fumble recovered by Pete Giftopoulos and Shane Conlan stripped Beuerlein on another play with Pete Curkendall recovering. Safety Ray Isom and Giftopoulos both matched the Penn State single season high for tackles in a game with eleven apiece. Isom, who played one of his strongest games of the year, also had two tackles for losses. "It was a tough football game for both sides," Paterno said.

"Both sides hit well. Nobody sald 'ouch' out there today." Layne's Condition is 'Very Critical' By MEDE NIX LUBBOCK, Texas (UPD) Former Detroit Lions quarterback Bobby Layne, in critical condition following weekend surgery, had breathing problems Monday that were brought under control, Methodist Hospital officials said. Layne had undergone surgery Saturday to control bleeding in his esophagus, and his condition has deteriorated since then, hospital spokesman Doug Hodel said. "He took a turn for the worse about 3:30 p.m. this afternoon and had trouble ventilating," Hodel said late Monday.

"'He is pretty-well stabilized right now, but he is being monitored very closely." Layne, 59, drove to Methodist Hospital at a.m. Saturday after awakening in pain, just three days after he had been released from a hospital in Pontiac, Mich. He was listed in serious condition following surgery Saturday, but he alipped to critical Sunday and to very critical Monday. Layne, a former University of Texas quarterback, was admitted to a Pontiac hospital Nov. 8 tor tests for 8 liver problem.

He had been operated on several years ago for cancer of the tongue, nose and cheek. and has been sullering from a liver disease for several years, said W. Nicholas Kerbawy, a friend of Layne and general manager of the Detroit Lions from 194858. Layne was released from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac Wednesday and flew to his home in Lubbock via private plane.

Layne, once known as the master of the two-minute offense, led the Lions to three NFL titles and also played for the Chicago Bears, New York Bulldogs and Pittsburgh Steelers. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hail of Fame in 1967. Clarion University's NCAA Division I wrestling team is ranked as the tenth best dual meet team in the nation, it was announced today by Amateur Wrestling News in AWN's Pre-Season Dual Meet Poll for the 1966-87 season. The poll shows lowa as the number 1 team, followed by Penn State, Oklahoma State, lowa State and North Carolina as the top five teams. The second five has Arizona State, Bloomsburg, Okiahoma, Michigan and Clarion rounding out the top ten dual meet teams.

"I'm very happy for our team which is really working very hard and has had a great attitude in the pre-season," responded Bubb to ranking. "I believe some of that ranking is a little recognition from last year's accomplishments, but we do return 5 quality Division I National Qualifiers and that's why 1 we're rated 10th. Since we do have 5 newcomers in this year's lineup the ranking could be a bit high, but we'll find out how true it is in our first 5 dual meets where we wrestle two top ten teams and two top 20," he continued. "By Christmas we'll certainly know where he added. The 1985-86 Golden Eagles ended the season with a 17-0-1 dual meet record, running coach Bubb's 20-year dual meet record to 259-71-2.
