Louis County was sentenced in St. Louis County Circuit Court Monday to life in prison for beating to death a man whose battered body was later found floating in the Meramec River. The killer, Craig A. Dawdy, 27, of the 200 block of Dundee Circle, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder. In imposing the sentence, Judge William M.

Corrigan told Dawdy, "There is nothing more vicious than to beat someone to death." The victim was Richard L. Stateler, 27, of the 1700 block of Cleveland Boulevard, Granite City. Stateler's sister, Joyce Smith, and other members of the victim's family were present Monday for the sentencing. "We lost a brother at the hands of this man," Smith said. "The man broke the Fifth Commandment: Thou shalt not kill." Smith told Corrigan that her brother had been "a kind and gentle man." Smith said Stateler's family approved the plea agreement between the state and Dawdy.

In exchange for Dawdy's plea of guilty, authorities reduced the charge to second-degree murder from first-degree murder. A conviction on the latter charge would have meant that Dawdy would never be eligible for parole. Dawdy confirmed in court a summation of the murder by prosecutor Doug Sidel. Sidel gave the following account of Stateler's death: On May 9, Dawdy's sister had alleged to Dawdy that she and Stateler, her boyfriend, had had a fight and that she had moved out of a house they shared. Dawdy became angry and took his sister and her two sons to the home of her ex-husband, Richard Dilly, 29, of the 2900 block of Dale Avenue, Granite City.

Dawdy and Dilly then ambushed Stateler at an address in Granite City, beat him with metal karate sticks and threw him in their car. "They drove him to the Meramec River (near Times Beach), where they beat him until he died, and then they threw him in the river," Sidel said. Stateler's body was found by three fishermen on May 14. An autopsy disclosed that Stateler had been dead when his body was thrown in the river. Dawdy later confessed to St.
