The Los Angeles Rams quarterback completed Just 6 of 25 passes Monday night but connected three times on the Rams' final drive to set up a 50-yard game-winning field goal by Mike Lansford with four seconds left in a 20-17 victory over the Chicago Bears. Oils, subbing for the injured Steve Bartkowskl for the second straight week, missed 13 straight passes after completing his first toss of the game. On the final drive, which LA began on its own 35 with 49 seconds remaining, Dils hit three passes good for 33 yards to get into Lansford's range.

"I didn't lose confidence. I actually thought that I threw the ball pretty well," Dhe could get a SOyarder. It worked." Both teams are now 7-2. Los Angeles beat the Bears at their own game in snapping Chicago's 14- game Soldier Field winning streak dating back to a December 1984 loss to Green Bay. The Rams held the Bears' rushing attack in check, frustrated backup quarterbacks Steve Fuller and Mike Tomczak and got key plays from their special teams.

In addition, LA received its usual final game out of Eric Dickerson, who rushed for 111 yards in 29 carries, and just enough out of its passing game. "We wanted to be in a position to control the game from the line of scrimmage, and that's what we did, right down to the last drive," said Dickerson, who was held to 46 yards in the Bears' 24-0 victory over LA in last season's NFC championship game. "They were doing a lot of barking against us in that game. They weren't doing it tonight. We knew we could run on them, on anyone." Lansford, whose field goal was the second longest of his career, thought he could have hit the game-winner from 60 yards away.

Earlier, he tied the game with a 26-yarder. "I knew I hit it well. 1 told them to get me to within 50 yards," said the barefoot kicker. "Was this my biggest thrill? Well, I made a kick that kept the Saints out of the playoffs and us in them a couple of years ago that was just as big." Bears Coach Mike Ditka refused to blame the loss on injuries to quarterback 1 Jim McMahon and running back Walter Payton, who left the game in the second half with a dislocated big toe on his right foot. "We had every chance to win the football game," Ditka said.

"Give the Rams credit. They played with poise underpressure." Leonard walked to where Hagler was sitting and extended his hand.

Hagler stared straight ahead, ignoring the former welterweight and junior middleweight champ. Leonard shuffled back to the microphone, a bit embarrassed. Promoter Bob Arum said Hagler is guaranteed $12 million and Leonard $11 million, making it the richest bout in history Hagler was listed a 4-1 favorite the opening odds posted Monday at the Caesars Palace Sports Book The lopsided odds are due to Leonard's inactivity and concern over his surgery to repair a torn retina his left eye Since he publicly challenged Hagler on May 1, Leonard has been asked to defend his decision to reenter the ring.
