3 AUG 1 3 7001 B5 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH METRO MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2001 Wells Fargo offers $100,000 to two groups here to provide affordable housing By Norm parish Of the Post-Dispatch The Wells Fargo Housing Foundation is planning to give two local groups $100,000 to provide more affordable housing in the St Louis region. The two nonprofit groups Beyond Housing and the VashonJeff-Vander-Lou Initiative will each receive $50,000 to provide housing to families with low and moderate incomes. The groups, however, must match the grants to get money from Wells Fargo. Both groups say they believe they can match the grants.

The Wells Housing Foundation's Focus Communities grants to St Louis are part of a half-dozen similar efforts in other cities nationwide, including Las Vegas, Seattle and Omaha, Neb. "Affordable housing has been declining in many of the nation's communities for some time," said Kimberly Jackson, executive director of the Wells Fargo Housing Foundation. "The Focus Communities Initiative creates an incentive for individuals, businesses and organizations to work together to develop solutions that will positively impact the community for years to come." In the Beyond Housing program, 20 houses would be built or rehabilitated in Pagedale and the northeastern portion of University City. The money for the Vashon Jeff-Vander-Lou Initiative will be used to acquire 20 city lots for 10 houses in north St Louis. "I'm excited to hear this," said Norman Seay, an activist and board of the Vashon Jeff-Vander-Lou Initiative.

"I hope that more foundations will come to assist us in our quest to make our community No. 1."
