Jesus Prepares For His Work Text: Luke The International Uniform Sunday Scbool Lesson for January 19. By WM. E. GILBOY, D. D.

Editor of Advance This lesson emphasizes the prepara- ion the baptism of Jesus and in he three-fold temptation during the days of His retirement in the wilderness. Manifestly, the preparation of Jesus for His work and mission went far beyond these events. There was the preparation of the home and he early years, as Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. But here, as He is about to enter upon His ministry, there comes a unique form of preparation in the emptation, or testing. It took three orms, and in each form we can see not only the temptation to some outward act, but also the trying of the nward spirit.

It was not merely the will of Jesus, )ut the soul of Jesus, that was being ested. The temptations were of the ort that come to every man con- cious of his call to a large mission md of his ability to fulfill it. In all three temptations the command that stones may be made bread, he temptation to dominate the kingdoms of the world, and the temptation personal vanity and power in dar- ng to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the finds the characteristic testing of the man of unusual strength and genius. One can see quite readily in the course of history the way in which musual men have met these tempta- ions. On Ihe one hand are world cohquerors lived chiefly to 'ulfill their own ambitions and pow.

Men have beari but pawns in their selfish write of a camp 300,000 men as i an unimportant In the world and Napoleon could in which he lost the latter fact were ncident. industry and busi- jess one sees aile men who have jved only for material results and profits. The interests of the communi- and of those whom they have used achieve their success have been en- irely On the other pand, fortunately, in every field of ife there have been great men and vomen who have lived or higher Even in fields where men hav who have lived who have pledg been characteristically selfish, then have been those their service only right and jus ice, kings and rulers whose chief ambition has been to serve thelf people, and eaptalns of industry who have sought td bfing into that afea a sense of huifiart values and a square deal. The tragedy of life is the tragedy of the men who might do so much for Ood and humanity, but who fail in the time of testing. Was the temptation of Jesus real? Ves, if we at all believe in-the incarnation and that the hitman life that He lived was in every respect a manifestation of the divine life In human form.
