atrn mi. 4B ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Sept. 11,1987 I n-pj fm mm WWII Glider Vets Recall Life As 'Big Target9 No Trace Of Cashier From Festus Fort Bragg, N.C, in 1943, headed for Morocco. By the end of the war, about 590 men had perished.

"Once a glider came down full of men, and the tail fell off," Williams said. "Then, another glider came in after it and flipped over, throwing men everywhere, making rifles go off." The gliders measured from 40 to '60 feet long. Their main function was to place the infantrymen behind enemy lines. "We were infantry that's all. We had to fight," said Williams, who was decorated with the French Croix de Guerre, the Belgian Croix de Guerre and the Dutch Order of Orange.

The gliders would also carry anti-tank guns, jeeps and even bulldozers. "We would fly at 500 feet, and when the transport would let us go, we would hit the ground just like that in less than a minute," he said. Boyer joined the Glider Infantry in September 1944 after it reached Holland. He was trained as a glider co-pilot in France. "The training amounted to going up five times," he said.

"I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I asked the pilot what would happen if I pulled the release rope (disen-gaging the glider from the transport). He said, 'See ya in hell, At this reunion, Boyer has a new story. For the first time In 42 years he went up in a glider on a recent vacation in Arizona. "We went by this place, and they were giving glider lessons," he said with a grin.

"I asked how much it cost and paid it I went up once. "I had to do it It was nostalgia. The old man had to do it over again." Or do it once without someone shooting at him. More than 170 men who served in the division gathered Thursday and began to tell and retell war stories. "We get together each year," said Gregory B.

Boyer, 70, a glider division veteran from Affton who is coordinating this year's meeting. "We even have three people from Belgium they stuck their necks out for Americans" during the war. Boyer, a semi-retired salesman of small metal products, repeatedly expressed his pride in the 325th Glider Infantry because of the risks the men took and the casualties incurred. Boyer entered the division when he was 25, still a young man but not oblivious to the dangers of war. "Most of our men were older because they were drafted toward the end of the war," he said.

The casualites were many. The division had 1,500 men when it left Forty-four years after he flew his first glider behind enemy lines to help win the war for the Allies in Europe, Fletcher Williams has the same patriotic feelings about fighting for a worthwhile cause. But he says he would think twice about piling into one of those rickety canvas-covered aircraft again with a dozen combat buddies just to get a good position on the enemy. "I don't know if I could ride in a glider again," said Williams, 65, a retired ammunition inspector from Berea, Ky. "Everytime you went up in a glider, you'd see those tracers coming up after you, and there was nothing to protect you.

"You were just a big target. I was fortunate. I was able to come home." Williams is attending the annual reunion of the 325th Glider Infantry that began Thursday at the Clarion Hotel and will continue through Saturday. S. African Planes Bomb Town, Kill Civilians, Angola Reports By Mary E.

Chollet 01 the Post-Dispatch Staff Six months ago today, Diana Jane Braungardt clocked out after her shift as a cashier at the Venture Store in Crystal City, grabbed her favorite coat an old one of her brother's and headed for her car in the parking lot. She was in a hurry to get home to study for an exam. She never arrived. Six months after Braungardt vanished from the store in the Twin City Mall the investigation has stalled. Her purse and other belongings were never found.

The car, a bright yellow Escort, was untouched. Police frankly admit that they have no clue as to where she is or whether she is alive. The FBI and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department also have reviewed the case and reached the same conclusion. Braungardt, 18, of the 800 block of West Main Street in Festus, has been missing since 10:02 p.m. on March 11.

While her classmates at Festus Senior High School graduated this summer and went on to new lives, Braun-gardt's family can only wait and hope, associates say. "We neither have a dead body or any word from Diana it's just a dead end," a spokeswoman for Child Find-Missouri said Thursday. An appeal by police to talk to a man who was Braungardt's last customer that night has gone unanswered. The man is no suspect but police believe he may be a witness. He is described as white, age 35 to 40, 5-foot-5, clean-shaven and with a dark complexion, dark hair and acne.

Child Fund has increased an initial reward of $500 to $2,000. Today, it plans to announce another increase. Braungardt's parents will join representatives of Child Find at a press conference this afternoon in Clayton to drum up new interest in the case. The parents, the Rev. Marvin and Jane Braungardt, were unavailable for comment on Thursday.

ANGOP said the raid followed several days of movements by South African ground forces and aircraft in- The bombing caused a "considerable number" of deaths and injuries among civilians, the agency said. Owner Of Dallas Paper Buys Houston Post Diana Jane Braungardt Missing since March Police have considered the possibility that Diana who is adopted may be trying to find her natural parents. But they have discounted the theory because she expressed no interest in such a search when her ents once offered to help her find the people. Crystal City Police Chief Glenn Boyer is somewhat encouraged by the dead end. "Normally, if there was foul play involved we would have the body," he said.

"The further along we go, the more optimistic I'm becoming that she just ran off." But her family has insisted that Diana would not run away. Her parents have noted that she was excited about a budding modeling career and was starting modeling classes. They say she never ran away before. And they note that she was carrying only about $20, had no credit cards and left her bank account untouched. Braungardt is 5-foot-6, 108 pounds, with medium-length, wavy brown hair and hazel eyes.

She was last seen wearing bright turquoise pants, her Venture smock and a boy's short, black coat. The phone number of the Crystal City police is 937-4601. side Angola's southern provinces of Cunene and Cuando Cubango. Crocker is the U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs.

It was the first high-level discussion between Washington and Angola, which Is governed by Marxists, since negotiations broke off in July. Angola has frequently accused South Africa of attacking targets inside Angola's southern border in support of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, a U.S.-backed rebel group. 1987, Reuters News Service LUANDA, Angola South African planes have bombed a town in Angola's southern Province of Cunene, killing many civilians, the official Angolan agency ANGOP reported on Thursday. The report came a day after a U.S.

ANGOP said that eight South African aircraft four Mirage fighters and four Buccaneers had raided Xangongo on Tuesday. Sun Publishing Co. of Ontario, Canada. For the same period, the Chronicle's circulation was 406,084 daily and 531,528 Sundays, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation. HOUSTON (AP) An affiliate of MediaNews Group, owner of the Dallas Times Herald, said Thursday that it had acquired the Houston Post from its Canadian owners for $150 million in cash and an additional amount to be determined by revenue. In 1979, after years of research, Mr. Marshall proved his point. With the help of Gen. Robert Barrow, then the commandant of the Marine Corps, Mr. Marshall found a photograph of the first flag-raising.

The picture showed him standing by with his radio equipment, just as he said he had been. Mr. Marshall said his patrol had raised the flag atop the extinct volcano to hearten Marines fighting on the north side of the island. But about an hour later, he said, Marines decided that the first flag was too small and got a larger one. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.

(AP) Gene M. Marshall, one of the Marines who raised the first American flag to fly over Iwo Jima in World War II, has died of the burns he suffered in a fire at his home. Mr. Marshall, 60, died Tuesday night in the burn unit at Winston-Salem's Baptist Hospital. He was burned about three weeks ago at his home.

Investigators said the fire was started by a cigarette smoldering in a sofa where he was sleeping. Mr. Marshall was 19 and a radio operator with the 5th Marine Division when it landed on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19.
