Clark R. Read; Fought In 3 Wars A funeral Mass for LL Col. Clark R. Read, a retired Army officer, will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. today at St.

Angela Merici Church. 14005 Davey Drive in Florissant Burial will be Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Col. Read, 66, died Sunday after suffering a heart attack while playing golf in Fairfield. 111.

Col. Read, of Black Jack, retired from the army in March 1966 after 27 years of service. He had served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in 1945 and was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in Korea as a company commander in an assault on a hill on Sept. 8, 1951.

Col. Read retired as a vice president of sales for the Dorris Co. on Sept. 1,1985. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; two daughters, Patricia Rogers of Fayette, and Colleen Kloepper of Hazelwood; a stepson, John Doelling of Baltimore; a brother, James Read of Maryland Heights; four sisters, Edith Waggoner, Zola Goodman, Meda Durocher and Martha Hippler, all of St.

Louis; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Glennon T. Moran, former Missouri liquor control supervisor and a highly decorated fighter pilot in World War II, died Wednesday at his home in south St. Louis County. Mr.

Moran, 67, had been ill with cancer for a long period. Mr. Moran, a lawyer, was appointed liquor control supervisor in 1965 by then-Gov. Warren E. Hearnes.

He resigned in 1966 to seek the Democratic nomination for St. Louis County prosecuting attorney. He defeated incumbent Daniel V. O'Brien in the primary but lost to Republican Gene McNary in the general election. In 1962, while recalled to active duty with the Air Force during the Berlin crisis, he ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination to Congress in the 2nd District.

After World War II, Mr. Moran got his law degree from Washington University in 1947 and started a law practice. But he returned to active duty in 1951 for the Korean War, serving 17 months. In 1973, he retired as a brigadier general and deputy chief of staff of the Missouri Air National Guard. Surviving are his wife, Dolores; three daughters, Mary Moran of Jeanne Moran of St.

Louis County and Shawn Clipper of Fenton; four sons, Glennon Moran Jr. of Concord, Patrick Moran of Ball- win. Mark Moran of St. Louis County and Daniel Moran of Rolla; a sister, Virginia Schroeder of Lakeland. two brothers.

Norbert Moran of Ft Lauderdale, and George Moran of Glen Carbon, and six grandchildren. Mr. Moran donated his body to the Washington University Medical School. Arrangements for a memorial service are pending. Sr.

CM. Kendrick; Librarian, Teacher A memorial Mass for Sister Clarice Marie Kendrick, librarian and teacher, will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Friday in Ryan Chapel at Fontbonne College, 6800 Wydown Boulevard in Clayton. Sister Kendrick, 85, died of conges-, tive heart failure Tuesday at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in Creve Coeur.

Sister Kendrick donated her body to the St. Louis University School of Medicine. Sister Kendrick, of the convent at Fontbonne College, was a part-time librarian at the college at the time of her death. She was a full-time librarian at the school from 1 963-73. Sister Kendrick took her vows in the Sisters of St.

Joseph of Carondelet in 1924. There are no immediate survivors. insists this is the final tour. He's another in the great American tradition of using non-singing, but major-box-office, actors in musical roles, a trend begun in the modern musical era by Yul Brynner in "The King and then continued by Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady" and Burton, to choose some of the prime examples. Harris' voice, never more than adequate, is poorer than ever, and "How to Handle a Woman," his one attempt at a ballad, is an embarrassment.

He's better in the title song, and several others, where singing is not necessary, though the speed factor blurs most of them pretty badly. He slows for some of the more emotional monologues, and then overacts. He uttered the word "vengeance" in the first act and then grasped his stomach as if an ulcer was flaring up. There are a number of fine voices in the cast, with both Martha Traverse, as Guenevere, and Patrick Godfrey, as Lancelot, showing considerable talent. Their duet, "Before I Gaze at You," is the musical high spot, followed by his rendition of "If Ever I Would Leave You." Godfrey generally refuses to be rushed, though "C'est Moi" pushes the speed limit a few times.

Traverse, on the other hand, sings at a pace that would qualify her for the pole position at tracks from Darlington to Daytona, and she doesn't brake when she speaks, usually in an emotionless manner. Harris' direction also reaches for every possible laugh, turning poor old King Pellinore (James Valentine) into a clown without even a shred of dignity. S. Chris Pender demonstrates a very proper amount of evil as Mordred, and gives a completely satisfying performance. If it's a speedy evening you want, with a lot of music at a very fast tempo, "Camelot" will provide it, and a lot of people on opening night seemed to want exactly that.

But I was distressed by the production, and when a veteran theatergoer turned to me on the way out and said, "Looks like a take-the-money-and-run tour," I feared he was right. By Joe Pollack Of th Post-Dispatch Staff The Guinness Book of Records devotes five pages to theater items like longest run, shortest review, most roles played and the like. There is no category for fastest performance, but I'd like to nominate the current "Camelot," which roared through the Fox Theatre Tuesday night as if King Arthur and his knights were going to Indianapolis for the 500 and not Merrie Olde for the jousts. Richard Harris and company, throwing caution to the winds and diction to the dictionary, completed the opening night performance in 2'2 hours including intermission a good 30 minutes under any production I'd ever seen, and if the first night is any indication, they'll be under two hours by the time they leave town after the Sunday matinee. Even the movie ran three hours.

The speed, which is there in almost all the songs and most of the speeches, makes it vital to have complete familiarity with the score in order to have any understanding of what is going on. I know the music and lyrics extremely well but still missed quite a bit along the way. It's hard to understand why a longtime actor like Harris, whose responsibility is total because he also directed, staged the production as if his cast were being paid by the hour, and he was the payer. Maybe the show plays better if you don't know what's going on; the Alan Jay Lerner-Fred-erick Loewe musical has some excellent songs, but the book is a muddle, and the second act is a drag at best, a disaster at worst. Come to think of it, the fact that the company zipped through it in 50 minutes made it better than usual.

Harris, who will be 53 next month and has never been accused of looking youthful, has been playing Arthur on a more-or-less-regular basis ever since he did the movie role in 1967 (Richard Burton originated it on Broadway six years earlier), and he fimeral hotices CZAR, ARCHIE (ART) On Sept. 2. 1986. loving brother of Florence, hllis Jane LINDNER. Reviewed by Jeremy C. Shea I like to take the latest Stephen King to the beach. Somehow amidst the sun and sand those dark creatures and sinister horrors don't seem quite as real. But this monster book (to use an irresistible pun) is almost 1,200 pages long; how can a vacationer tote it around without a shopping cart? I carried "It" for almost two weeks; the results were stronger forearms and hours of spooky, chilling fun. My initial reaction had been to return King's epic to my book editor.

But then, like many of King's characters, curiosity led to my downfall. Just a glance at the first few pages; alas, who can put this giant novel aside once the unspeakable demons start crawling and slithering about. Derry, Maine, seems almost impossibly bucolic, an idyllic New England village complete with white church steeples and stalwart Yankee merchants. The reader, of course, knows better, but Derry's residents are blissfully unaware of the evil lurking beneath their quiet streets. The only ones who had suspected were several fifth graders.

Parents and teachers ridiculed such nonsense so the ten-year-olds were left alone to battle "It." King constructs his complex tale through a series of interlocking flashbacks. Twenty-eight years later the intrepid children, now approaching middle age, reunite in Derry. "It" has also returned, ready to exact vengeance for the wounds inflicted by these insolent upstarts. All this is vintage King, just a lot more than usual. It is indeed a loath- KING See Brodak KRAEMER, VENCY L.

Visitation after 10 a.m. Fri. Stephen King some, frightening villain, assuming all manner of bewildering disguises. First a clown, then a bird, next a teenage werewolf and finally but that would spoil the suspense. King once again demonstrates his mastery of nostalgia from the fifties, that suddenly distant era when coke bottles were green, rock and roll was an infant and inflation happened only in decadent Europe.

He alternates pleasant childhood memories with flashes of stark fright before blithely resuming recollections of growing up in Derry butterfingers for a nickel and ghosts in the storm sewer. So is this magnum opus of terror worth $22.95 and the nuisance of hefting about almost five pounds? I admit to being a King fan, yet "It" is literally too much. But who can resist once King has cast his spell; I couldn't stop until It's final identity was at last revealed. Jeremy C. Shea is a lawyer living in Madison, Wisconsin.

Kirkwood Rd. Visitation Thurs. and 2 to 9 p.m. the author has filled out a work that will interest anyone with Harvard on the brain. This does not mean that Vigeland has produced another encomium to the geniuses in the Yard.

His discussion of MATEP, the ambitious and horribly expensive co-generation scheme that has so far failed to do well by doing good, is caustic. He suggests that often Harvard, as an institution, cares less for its loyal alumni than the latter feel about their alma mater. Yet, despite the author's determined effort not to be co-opted, the charm and dedication of so many of the Harvard bureaucracy, especially the extra-ordinarily impressive Fred Glimp, comes through as the major motif of this little book. In the end, as ever, this is another contribution to the Harvardiana shelf, critical but deeply admiring. Joseph Losos is a St.

Louis banker. GREAT GOOD FORTUNE: How Harvard Makes its Money By Carl Vigeland 239 pages, Houghton Mifflin, $18.95 Reviewed by Joseph Losos Even for an institution celebrating its 350th birthday, the supply of books about Harvard seems inexhaustible. one is a study of how Harvard derives its income, how it manages its portfolio, and how it deals with the social and economic issues which its great wealth and immense responsibilities present. Thus Carl Vigeland discusses not only the obviously exciting questions of divestiture of South-African connected investments and the fund-raising mechanisms of the university, but also the intricacies of option trading and the nuances of the governing boards of Harvard. All of this barely makes a book, but by genial padding and copious quotations CLOUSE, JAMES (CURT), on Sept.
