Jones, who founded Project Hope in 1970, was honored for his work with that organization as well as "for his work as a clergyman trying to equalize the disparity in the community between black and white," Tabs Holt was selected, Tabscott said, because of his commitment to the labor movement and his work within the St. Louis Newspaper Guild. "He also has worked to preserve the history of St.

Louis in pictures, and his photojournalism is worthy of respect," Tabscott said. OBITUARIES each award recipient "represents a discipline in Lovejoy's life the press, the ministry, the political arena and the healer." "This is the 150th anniversary of Lovejoy's death, so we are doing something very special this year" in giving the four awards, Tabscott said. The society and the awards are named for Elijah Parish Lovejoy, an abolitionist, editor and clergyman who was murdered in Alton. He was killed while defending his printing press from a pro-slavery mob; he is regarded as the first martyr for a free press in the United States. Pepper has been professor and chairman of the department of community medicine at St.

Tabscott said that Pepper had been selected because of his work in the health-care area and that Woods had By Charlene Prost Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Four people who have made contributions to the community got awards Sunday from the St. Louis Elijah P. Lovejoy Society.

Although the society traditionally gives one award each year, it gave more this year to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lovejoy's death. The recipients are: Dr. Max Pepper, chairman of the department of community medicine at St. Louis University Medical School, for his work to improve health care for the poor; the Rev. Buck Jones, founder and director of Project Hope, which helps the poor in St.

Louis and East St. Louis; Robert Holt a Post-Dispatch photographer; and Missouri Lt. Gov. Harriett Woods, who is also a former state legislator. The awards were given Sunday afternoon at a ceremony at the Old Courthouse, 11 North Fourth Street.

The Rev. Robert Tabscott, a spokesman for the society, said that Marguerite F. Shepard, 73; Was Reporter Marguerite Shepard, a reporter at the Globe-Democrat for 31 years, died Saturday of heart disease at the Coronado Hospital in Coronado, Calif. She was 73. No funeral is planned.

Her body was cremated. Miss Shepard joined the Globe-Democrat in 1943 as a general-assignment reporter. She was one of the first woman reporters in St. Louis. She wrote a number of series on mental-health problems in Missouri.

Her articles led to legislation that improved hospital conditions in the mental-health field across the state. Before she joined the Globe-Democrat, Miss Shepard taught in public schools around Evansville, Ind. She retired in 1974 and moved to Coronado in 1977. There are no immediate survivors.
