4-A AILY SUNDAY, MAY 7, 1995 GALVESTON COUNTY, TEXAS Tokyo narrowly another toxic gas disaster The Associated Press TOKYO Japanese were asking Saturday why someone would choose Children's Day, a national holiday of family outings, to try to spread poison gas in one of Japan's most crowded train stations. If not for the swift work of station employees, who extinguished two burning plastic bags of chemicals left in a men's room, Tokyo could once again have been faced with an underground disaster. The nerve gas attack on Tokyo subways almost seven weeks ago that killed 12 people and sickened 5,500 shattered the sense that terrorist attacks do not happen here. Three subsequent gassings, two in crowded train stations, sent more than 500 people to hospitals with irritated eyes and throats, but no one was seriously injured and police were calling the crimes probable copycats. One of the bags left burning Friday contained sodium cyanide, the other diluted sulfuric acid.

Had the vapors combined correctly, they could have formed enough hydrogen cyanide to kill at least 10,000 people in seconds. "Just when we started to feel a little secure again, this happens," popular singer and actress Mami Yamase said Saturday on a national talk show. Tin so scared." The four train station employees who rushed to put out the fire were hailed by the national Asahi newspaper as heroes. Obituaries Cora I. Keith LEAGUE CITY Cora I.
