Steamers Cut Roster To 20 for the record 6C Oct. 22, 1985 ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Football TV, Radio Sports The Steamers cut defender Tim Schulz, goalie Pat Baker and midfielder David Fernandez on Monday, bringing their roster to 20 just in time to make the Major Indoor Soccer League's deadline. Earlier in the preseason, Steamers coach Pat McBride had thought about carrying three goalkeepers for the season. Instead, he opted to stay with last season's netminders, Slobo Hi-jevski and Ed Gettemeier.

"Keeping three goalies is a luxury we can't afford right now," said McBride. "But I liked what I saw of Pat. If we have an injury, I'd be inter- ested in activating him." Strength at midfield led to the release of both Schulz and Fernandez. McBride said that the team was so deep in the middle that Fernandez was expendable and that Mark Fre-derickson would be switched to defender. Frederickson's move to the back line left Schulz the odd man out.

McBride called the team "well-protected in the back. It became a matter of too many bodies." In 45 games with the Steamers last season, Schulz scored 2 goals and added 6 assists. He got the news Friday. "I had time to get my thoughts to- TODAY MAJOR-LEAGUE BASEBALL: World Series, Cardinals vs. Kansas Cltv at Busch Stadium, 7:35 p.m.

(At Crescent) Koren Ikeda with an 8-iron on the 136-yard No. 8 hole. From page one Hanifan, "we missed the open guy." That helps to clear up some of the mystery. Lomax has been intercepted six times, has thrown only one TD pass and had a long completion of 30 yards in the last three games. At his current rate, Lomax would finish the season with 3,300 yards passing.

In 1984, he had 4,614. And wide receiver Roy Green, once the most dangerous flyer in pro football, has averaged only 10.7 yards on his last 12 receptions. The other starting wideout, Pat Tilley, has 14 catches. Tilley had 52 last season. The passing game has been dormant, and the offense is being dragged down.

The Cardinals have scored only 27 points in their last three games. In the first three quarters of their last three games, the Cardinals have managed only two field goals. Ugh. They've scored their only three touchdowns during the fourth quarter, when it's been too late. Still, there is hope for tomorrow.

Lomax is a fighter who might be coming out of it. He showed a lot of heart by rallying for a time in the second half Sunday, firing 1 1 completions in 14 attempts for 98 yards in one torrid stretch. "I really admired how he came back," Hanifan said. "He showed me a helluva lot. He's going to come through this." Pass protection: Some of the more recent sacks can be blamed on Lomax and his fuzzy focus.

He could be taking too much time to spot a receiver. Whatever the reasons, the Cardinals allowed six more sacks on Sunday. That gives them 26 for the year. Only four teams have been beaten for more. It's a major problem.

Ottis Anderson: His third-quarter fumble, which led to a Steelers field goal, was a blotch on an otherwise fine game. Anderson had 88 yards rushing on 16 carries, and the big plays surfaced. Anderson had runs of 25 and 16 yards against the Steelers. In 1984, Anderson's longest run was for 24 yards; he already has dashes of 38, 36 and 25 yards this season. Anderson has 15 runs of 10 or more yards this season, which means that one out of every seven of his carries is being broken for double-figure yardage.

That's impressive. Anderson (486 yards overall) is averaging 4.6 yards per carry in 1985. If he can maintain that average, it will be his best since his rookie season (4.8 in 1979). J.T. Smith: Left for dead after being cut by Kansas City, wide receiver Smith has developed into one of the Cardinals' more consistent performers.

Over the last three games, he has caught 11 passes for an average of 16.0. Over the last two games, he has averaged 14.2 yards on his five punt returns. Smith nearly cracked one all the way (31 yards) against the Steelers. Hancock defeated Maplewood 15-7, 15-8 Rosary def. McCluer 15-4, 14-16, 15-3 Lutheran North def.

Even though the Cardinals didn't get a sack, the pressure was turned up considerably.

Defensive coordinator Floyd Peters tried some new tactics and they helped. He used linebacker Freddie Joe Nunn as the left defensive end on passing downs, a move that pushed Al Baker inside. With Baker slotted next to tackle David Galloway, that helped ease the incessant double-teaming that Galloway has been facing. Galloway forced Steelers quarterback Mark Malone into a hurried pass that was picked off and returned 53 yards by E.J. Junior.

Nunn had some good runs at Malone. On a few plays, Peters also had left end Baker and right end Curtis Greer flip-flop positions. Anything for some production. With only 10 sacks in seven games, the Cardinals rank dead-least in the NFL. That has them leading the league in embarrasment.

"We showed some improvement," Peters said. "Now we have to show a little more improvement. We had some pressure, but we're not getting down. So there's no excuses." Despite the lack of quarterback muggings, the Cardinals aren't that far behind last year's pace. They had 16 sacks after seven games in 1984.

The key was that the Big Red rush closed with a bang: 39 sacks in the final nine games. E.J. Junior, the middle linebacker, and strong safety Leonard Smith: Junior had that majestic interception and return, and he made seven unassisted tackles. After somewhat of a lull, Junior was the enforcer of old. "E.J.

played his best game to date," said Peters. "He stepped up and attacked people and did his job." Smith made one mistake he slipped and fell on Louis Lipps' 45-yard TD reception but was a ramrod against the run. Smith had 11 unassisted tackles, made a jarring hit on Walter Abercrombie that prompted a fumble (the Cardinals couldn't recover), and he made a saving tackle on Rich Erenberg after the Steelers' back had caught a pass on the Cardinals' 2. Special Teams: A disaster area. They allowed a 40-yard kickoff return that set up the first Steelers TD.

Perry Harrington fumbled the ensuing kick-off and the Steelers cashed it in for another TD. There was a bad snap on an attempted punt that gave the Steelers good field position, and there was a 26-yard punt that led to a Steelers field goal. One other thing: The Cardinals are lagging in their kickoff returns. They entered Sunday's game with an average runback of 19.4 yards, the fifth-worst mark in the league. Stump Mitchell isn't getting the blocking and has averaged only 16.5 yards on his last 13 returns.

J. 's Status Is In Doubt For Sunday By Bernie Miklasz Of the Post-Dispatch Staff Cardinals running back Ottis Anderson suffered the most serious wounds in Sunday's 23-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Anderson, who carried the ball 16 times and caught five passes, suffered a bruised knee and two dislocated toes. Anderson's status for Sunday's home game against the Houston Oilers is unknown, although he was walking with a pronounced limp and appeared to be in a great deal of discomfort on Monday. "We'll have to play that by ear," Cardinals coach Jim Hanifan said.

"We'll see how he shuffles around this week." Linebacker E.J. Junior, who played on a sore right ankle, also bruised his right heel in Sunday's game. He's limping around, but is expected to be ready for the Oilers. Hanifan had these comments to make about the repeated suggestions that the Cardinals and quarterback Neil Lomax miss the presence of Rod Dowhower, the team's former offensive coordinator who is in his first year as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts: "When Rod was here (1983-84), we had the same damn problems we're having now. I was thinking on the plane coming back from Pittsburgh, that if Rod was there we'd be sitting together, saying 'What are we going to do Is Hanifan aggravated by the Dowhower speculation? "I would imagine so," he said.

Oklahoma State, paced by medalist Scott Ver-plank, placed all six of its golfers in the top 10 and scored a 25-stroke victory in the first Marriott Tan-Tar-A Collegiate Invitational. Verplank, an All-American who made national headlines this past summer when he won the PGA's Western Open, carded a 2-under-par 140, firing 70s in the morning and afternoon rounds. His score helped the Cowboys to a 6-under-par team performance. Verplank edged teammates Tim Fleming and Kevin Whipple, who placed second and third, respectively, with scores of 142 and 143.

Oklahoma finished second at 587. Missouri, led by Greg Meredith's 144, edged Oral Roberts for third, 595-596. Starting Wednesday, season ticketh-olders will be in their familiar surroundings. Ornest said he was not aware that some of the new seats near the visitors' bench on Saturday had cut into the bench area. This apparently is what caused players from both teams to complain, during their stints on the cramped bench, that the one door would not swing open. "It created a dogleg there," said Ornest, "and I didn't realize that that corner had been taken." He has not informed Ziegler that the Blues will be transferring back to their old crisscross setup. "I'll get around to it," said Ornest "It isn't a rule, you know.

It was just a request. I should have ignored it, and didn't, and I made a mistake. And I'm second-guessing myself. I'm to blame for everything. "I'm human.

I make mistakes. But moost of them are errors of enthusiasm." BLUENOTES: Ornest said Saturday's announced crowd of 10,123 was based on tickets sold.
