Locker Room From page one Saturday than it has at any time this season. "It looked to me that our defensive team played hard from the first snap of the ballgame to the last," Missouri coach Woody Widenhofer said.

"This is a great football team Nebraska. I wouldn't say that they came in here and walked over us." McMillan finished with 10 total tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. He narrowly missed another interception when he bobbled a dropped pass thrown by quarterback McCathorn Clayton early in the second half. "I don't know how you can play any better than he's been playing," Widenhofer said. "If he's not one of the finest free safeties in the country, I don't know who is." As for Chapura, it seemed as if two or three Missouri players were wearing his jersey number 74 on Saturday, because his name was called out after nearly every Missouri tackle.

He finished with 21 total tackles, including nine solos. Despite his performance, Chapura had little to say after the defeat. "We gave it a shot," he said. McMillan was more upbeat. "We played them hard.

I think we beat them," McMillan said. "We just didn't put enough points on the board." Linebacker Buck Stinson, who recorded 15 total tackles, agreed. "As far as defensively, I think we did (outplay Nebraska)," he said. Except for a career-high 199 yards by All-America candidate Doug DuBose at tailback, the 'Huskers didn't get much done offensively. Missouri enjoyed a 19-16 edge in first downs and held the nation's second-ranked offense to one touchdown.

Missouri, Johnson 6-87, Overshown 3-56, Moore 2-41, Thetford 3-32, Lammers 2-17, Henry 1-12 UPI I I Nebraska running back Doug BuBose churns through the Miss ouri defense for good yardage in the first half. BuBose wound up with 199 yards on 29 carries. That's right.

The nation's 98th-ranked defense held the 'Huskers to only one touchdown a 22-yard run by DuBose midway through the fourth quarter. "Any time you hold a team like Nebraska to one touchdown, you feel inside like you're beating them," Stinson said. "But you still have to face the fact that you lost the game. I mean, it's not like you can go out and celebrate." Which tells you just how snakebit-ten the Tigers are this season. For once, the defense played well, but the offense self-destructed with four turnovers, several bobbled center snaps and several critical penalties.

How They Scored "The offense didn't screw up," defensive back Tony Facinelli insisted. "We just didn't get any breaks. They've carried us all season." But that was not the case Saturday. With Nebraska leading 12-7 midway through the second quarter, Warren Seitz found Herbert "June Bug" Johnson for a 25-yard pass play to the Nebraska 34, a key completion on third and 9. Hold it.

Holding Missouri. Ball backed up to the Tigers' 31 a swing of 35 yards. Nebraska held a 15-13 lead late in the third quarter when Seitz found Pat Thetford over the middle on third and 1 1 for a 37-yard gain to the Nebraska 21. But another holding penalty backed the Tigers to their 32, a swing of 47 yards. "Every time we got a first down, it seemed like there was a holding penalty or something that took the momentum away," Widenhofer said.

"The great thing about it, our kids didn't quit and they played hard all the way." Time after time, the Tigers' defense was able to work around offensive miscues. In the first half, a fumbled center snap and an interception gave Nebraska field position deep in Tiger territory. But both times, the 'Huskers had to settle for field goals by Klein. Nebraska was able to mount three minidrives in the first half for three more Klein kicks and a 15-7 halftime lead. Missouri's score came on a three-play, 59-yard drive capped by Victor Moore's leaping grab of a Seitz pass for a 33-yard touchdown.

The Tigers mounted their best drive of the game early in the third quarter when Seitz capped a 73-yard march with a 13-yard touchdown scramble. The Tigers went for two points on the conversion, but Seitz fumbled the snap and the Tigers still trailed 15-13. In the fourth quarter, a fumbled snap broke the Tigers' back. With Missouri trailing 18-13, quarterback Marlon Adler missed connections on a snap from center Dal Lockwood on third and 2. Nebraska's Mike Knox recovered with 8:55 left to play, and three plays later DuBose found the end zone for Nebraska's only touchdown.

Missouri had a little trickery in mind on the play, Widenhofer said in his postgame news conference. "We were going to toss to (halfback Darrell) Wallace and throw it back to Marlon," Widenhofer said, "That would have been a great play for us. That gave them great field position, and they popped a sweep to the left side and scored." Adler, who replaced the injured Seitz on two occasions Saturday, threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to freshman Patrick Overshown on the game's final play. Too little, too late. "I think I shed a couple tears at the end of this game because I thought we could've won it," Facinelli said.

Osborne, for one, was glad to get out of town with 5-1 record and his team's national ranking intact. "The Missouri players played a very emotional game," he said. "They played with confidence. They know they can play with anyone now." Well, almost anyone. Klein was in a league of his own Saturday.

WITH MIZZOU-NEBRASKA Dale Klein's seven field goals masked Nebraska's inability to push the ball into the end lone. Why did the 29-point favorites have so many problems with the Missouri defense? Nebraska coach Tom Osborne: Their defense played very well, with lots of emotion. We also had some motion penalties (in the first half) that slowed us down. Nebraska quarterback Travis Turner: This is my fifth year, and I knew the game would be like this, especially on their home turf. There was no way they were going to lay down for us.

Missouri coach Woody Widenhofer: Our defense played hard from the first snap to the last. They (Cornhuskers) are a great team and they didn't come in here and walk over us. How was Nebraska running back Doug DuBose able to gain 199 yards, a career high for him and the most against Missouri this year? DuBose: I can't take all the credit. The offensive line did a good job. We don't look to do one thing when we come into a game.

We just go with the play that's called and try to execute well. Missouri's new artificial surface has garnered complaints from nearly every team that has played at Faurot Field this season. How did the Cornhuskers like it? Frank Solich, Nebraska running back coach: It (the slippery turf) affected the way we called the ball game. It might have to do with the sand in the turf. You could see the sand laying there in some spots.

Turner: Yesterday it was soaking wet with all the rain, and the footing was great. Today, it was very slippery. The sand is very coarse and it burns the skin when you land and skid on the ground. We had a terrible time with our new turf last year, and it's fine now, so maybe the turf here will work out. What led up to the final play of the game when Missouri quarterback Marlon Adler hit Patrick Overshown for a 24-yard touchdown pass? Osborne: The last turnover was my fault.

I'll take credit for it. I was trying to get (reserve quarterback Clete) Blakeman some experience. What if anything, did Missouri's much-improved performance show to the rest of the Big Eight? Missouri defensive back Erik McMillan: If anything, I think we showed people that we are a lot better. That we can play a lot better than we've shown. Missouri's defense had played well in spurts in previous games, but finally put together a full game of strong defense.

What happened? Missouri linebacker Buck Stinson: It was just a matter of time before we gelled and got used to the defense and played defense for a whole game. McMillan: The main thing is knowledge. If you don't know what you're doing, you can't perform. 29-vard field goal. Time: 1:35.

Nebraska 15, Missouri 7. THIRD QUARTER MISSOURI: On second down from its 28, Missouri made 22 yards on a pass from Seitz, moving the ball to midfield. Three rushes went for 24 yards and an 11-yard pass moved the ball to the Nebraska 14. On third down, Seitz scrambled and scored from 13 yards. The two-point conversion attempt failed when Seitz fumbled the snap.

Time: 11:27. Nebraska 15, Missouri 13. NEBRASKA: A 30-yard run by DuBose moved the ball to the Missouri 39. Four runs moved the ball to the 26, but two incompletions killed the drive. Klein then kicked a 43-yard field goal.

Time: 0:25. Nebraska 18, Missouri 13. NEBRASKA: Knox recovered an Adler fumble on the Missouri 39. Rathman ran for 9 yards, and DuBose ran for 8 to the 22. DuBose then ran 22 yards for the touchdown from the left side.

Klein kicked the extra point. Time: 7:52. Nebraska 2S, Missouri 13. NEBRASKA: After returning a punt to the Missouri 40. Five runs gained 14 yards, and the drive stalled on the Missouri 26.

Klein then kicked a 43-yard field goal. Time: 4:16. Nebraska 28, Missouri 13. MISSOURI: McMillan recovered a fumble on the Nebraska 24 with 4 seconds left in the game. Adler then passed to Overshown for the touchdown as time expired.

Whelihan kicked the extra point. Time: 0:00. Nebraska 28, Missouri 20. FIRST QUARTER NEBRASKA: Washington intercepted a pass by Seitz on the Missouri 26. Five rushes gained 16 yards, but an illegal procedure penalty killed the drive.

Klein then kicked 32-vard field goal. Time: 7:27. Nebraska 3, Missouri 0. MISSOURI: Clark returned the ensuing kick-off to the Missouri 41. A pass to Johnson gained 14 yards and Seitz ran for 12.

Seitz then threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Moore. Time: 6:37. Missouri 7, Nebraska 3. NEBRASKA: DuBose took the next kickoff 48 yards to the Nebraska 46. Miles ran for 40 yards to the Missouri 11.

The next three plays gained 7 yards, and Klein then kicked 22-yard field goal. Time: 3:52. Missouri 7, Nebraska 6. SECOND QUARTER NEBRASKA: DuBose carried the ball 4 times for 60 yards, including a 51-vard run to the Missouri 25. An iliegol-procedure penalty again killed the drive.

Klein then kicked a 43-yard field goal. Time: 12:30. Nebraska 9, Missouri 7. NEBRASKA: Seitz was intercepted by Carr, who returned to the Missouri 32. Three rushes netted only 5 yards, and lein then kicked a 44-yard field goal.

Time: 8:29. Nebraska 12, Missouri 7. NEBRASKA: Using 10 successive rushing plays, Nebraska marched to the Missouri 11. DuBose had 3 carries In a row for 20 yards, including a successful fourth-and-1 run.
