$1 5.95 Reviewed by Joana Oetter Tiara's Heart" won the London TimesJonathan Cape Young Writers' Competition, a prize providing a stimulus lor people under 30 who are contemplating a writing career. It is Joseph Olshan's first novel, and although his no household name in literature yet it may be soon. Most of the story deals, directly or indirectly, with the special love that develops between David, a lonely eight-year-old Jewish boy, and Clara, his parents' Jamaican housekeeper. Clara becomes the tower of strength that enables David to cope with his inadequate and self-centered mother and a father who is not so much a bad father as a not very good one. During their fjve-year relationship, the bonds between Clara and David tighten, especially when the parents divorce and David: must decide whab he wants, only to realize that what he really wants Is not one of his options.

The viewpoint is through David's eyes without obscuring Clara's story and the dark, terrible secret from her past Both are looking for and find in each other someone to belong to. What fixes this novel in the mind is thejuUjor's ability to register the fluctuations of emotions with remarkable restraint and narrative power. "Clara's Heart' is written as opposed to narrated. To bring off a mixed-up child like David without slipping Into sentimentality, to make him and Gara so right and believable together despite their wide differences in age, color and culture, and to have resisted the temptation to use bis protagonists' pain as a vehicle for self-indulgent writing is the mark of a gifted novelist Olshan construes with care a tender, subtly ironical dialogue (including Jamaican patois), and he hears the delicate and textured modulations of moods and feelings which are never as intense as the subject warrants. For example, this is Clara's reaction when David, terribly upset to hear that he must accept their inevitable separation, tells her that she'll "just be like a nigger" in the end: "'We really not de same blood, nor even de same Clara said in won- Joseph Olshan derment as though realizing it for the very first time.

'Like when me was looking at dose bad, insulting children ar de ice-cream place, me was thinking, Dese are white people insulting you, a black woman. But you, David, were different' Her face clouded over and she whirled away from him, pressing her fists to her temples. 'I don't know, man, so strange, but I really believe a force was in this dis world that bind us. A long, lovely moment you and I bad, like a wave coming from de sea and curved so perfect round us and connect us even closer dan She shrugged. 'Suppose it couldn't ride forever, it have to "Clara's Heart" is a sensitive love story, in the sense that Clara and David are both loving people.

This love flows between the reader and the characters as it does between the characters themselves. The author says of his book, "I cast it in the. third person to help me be objective about the characters. I discarded all the flowering passages and weeded out the commercial stuff because it was not believable. I cut the book to the bone to get at the passion." That last sentence seems to sum up the essence of good writing.

Instead of referring to inhabitants of the chief section of what is now Czechoslovakia, it was used to define those members of society who lived on their wits, who opted out of the normal social order, and who devised, or tried to devise, the culture of the coming age. Jerrold Seigel attributes the term to a belief that Gypsies came from Bohemia (an Idea now completely discredited) and that the Parisians who fit the above description were the gypsies of modern life.

Seigel, a St. Louis-born Princeton professor, explains many more things in this carefully written work. His thesis is straight-forward, although often rather complex in the telling. From the 1930s on, after the fall of the Bourbons marked the end of the old tradition of royal literary and artistic patronage, young intellectuals (and their more numerous half-baked confreres) congregated in areas on the Left Bank in Paris without steady income or probable chance for fame. Services entrusted to YAN-DELL Mortuary. who came after 1918, an atmosphere of free thinking, free sex and artistic innovation was proclaimed. This naturally merged, in the minds of many in the new Bohemia and critics without into political radicalism. But that the author says, is misleading.

The Bohemian were not real foes of the bourgeois system; in fact it was only in a thoroughly bourgeois epoch that the whole phenomenon could take place. Many, perhaps most of the denizens were hard-working puritans, and their philosophy of freedom was an analogue of the libertarianism which underlay liberal capitalism. In fact, the book maintains, the story of Parisian Bohemianism is a fine example of the complexity of class and ideology in the world of individualist theory, and the French, with their penchant for developing theoretical possibilities, have created a model of bougeois society in revolt against itself. All of this is illustrated by long, sometimes repetitious, discussions of the lives and works of Courbet Appol-linaire and other famous artistic figures. This is not as romantic as La Boeheme.

Gray led the band through most of its most familiar songs and threw in a couple hard-driving blues workouts for good measure. Miller proved a good foil for Gray's vocals in "Long Island Lady" and added a jazz-inflected chordal style through most of the extended instrumental jams. "Searchin' for a Rainbow" and "Heard It in a Love Song" brought roars of approval from the audience. Eubanks' flute and sax are the key ingredient in the sound of most of the band's instrumental motifs. This was particularly true in the band's encore, "Can't You See?" "24 Hours" and "This 01' Cowboy" were among the highlights of the concert Although the Marshall Tucker Band is currently without a recording contract its musical heart is beating strongly.

1 i By David Surkamp One or Southern rock's most successful and enduring groups, the Marshall Tucker Band, was at Westport Playhouse Wednesday to start a two-night engagement The band has recently reformed, and this St Louis appearance is one of its first appearances with the new personnel. Lead vocalist Doug Gray and multi-instrumentalist Jerry Eubanks are the only members left from the Marshall Tucker Band as it began in 1972. This South Carolina-based group is noted for multi-textured instrumental tracks supporting country-tinged Southern rock music, and it has remained faithful to a highly recognizable sound. The loss of the original guitarist Toy Caldwell, a distinctive stylist and gifted songwriter, was a major blow, for Caldwell had a truly individual grasp of his instrument and was a major creative force.
