ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Nov. 3, 1985 2D Sports Oklahoma Big Ejght Throttles KU 48-6 NORMAN, Okla. (AP) In two previous games, Oklahoma State sophomore- tailback Thurman Thomas, hobbled by a nagging ankle injury, had failed to top 100 yards. Still, he came info Saturday's Big Eight Conference game with Colorado as the fourth-leading rusher in the nation, and he more than justified that ranking. Thurman rushed for 201 yards and two touchdowns as the Cowboys (No. 12 AP, No. 13 UPI) held off determined Colorado 14-11.

"Thurman complained about the altitude, but he really exerted himself today," said OSU coach Pat Jones. Thomas scored late in the second quarter on a 1-yard run and early in the third quarter on a 60-yard dash, giving OSU a seemingly secure 14-3 lead in the rugged defensive struggle. The Cowboys then were able to withstand a Colorado rally in the final quarter. "I really didn't think Colorado could come back from 14-3 with a fullback-oriented attack," said Jones. "The wishbone is not a catchup offense.

But you have to give (Colorado reserve quarterback Craig) Keenan a lot of credit. He did a great job." Thomas' long run, which proved to be the difference, was a sweep to the outside. Said Thomas: "It was a little slow developing, but then I saw a big crease behind the fullback and the tight enrf Colorado, averaging 286 yards per game on the ground coming into the game, finished with 220 Saturday. "It took us entirely too long to figure out how to move the ball," said Colorado coach Bill McCartney, who because of injuries was forced to use three quarterbacks in the game. "You can't keep shifting quarterbacks and expect to maintain continuity," said McCartney.

Of Keenan, McCartney said: "Last week (against Nebraska) he just didn't get the job done. Today in the second half I think he showed what kind of athlete he is." N.Y. High School Plans Drug Tests CUFTON SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) Drug testing will begin next week for junior and senior high school students in the Phelps-Clifton Springs School district in what is believed to be the first such effort in the state, officials said. State Education Department officials in Albany said Friday that the plan was the first that they knew of in the state.

The Cornhuskers steamrolled K-State 41-3 in the Big Eight Conference game in Manhattan, Kan. Nebraska's tilh) Steeeze zer said. "On offense, our halfbacks didn't have a big day like last week, but our quarterbacks and fullbacks did their jobs. "I don't know why I was worried, but I was," Switzer said following the Sooners' third Big Eight Conference win without a loss and fifth victory in six games.

Kansas is 5-4 overall and 1-3 inthe Big Eight. Oklahoma was ranked No. 8 by UPI, No. 9 by AP. $witzer said freshman quarterback Jamelle Holieway, making his second start, "executed the wishbone like a veteran.

He put on a great exhibition of knuckleball running." Holieway led all rushers with 162 yards and scored one touchdown. Holieway said: "The reason I was keeping the ball so much today was because Kansas was trying to string out their defense so we couldn't get outside. Most of my yards came when I would, cut back against that defense." In addition to his running, Holieway completed five passes, including a 42-yard throw to Keith Jackson for Okla homa first touchdown. Said Jackson: "I thought we would probably throw some today and I was glad to get the call. I wasn the primary receiver (on the touchdown pass).

It was supposed to go to our halfback, but he was covered, so Jamelle threw to me." Freshman fullback Leon Perry, who scored on runs of 2 and 30 yards, said: I break tackles, it's something that just happens. I'm comfortable in the role I'm playing now and it seems to be working well." Said Kansas coach Mike Gottfried of the Sooners: "They manhandled us and they are going to manhandle a lot of people. I've lined up against a lot of defensive teams, but never a better one than Oklahoma. And offensively, I don't remember a quarterback that scrambles as much as that one (Holieway). They are good, they have so many good people.

We knew they were good, but Oklahoma ran for 424 yards and completed five of eight passes for 101 yards while holding the Jayhawks to 63 yards rushing and 112 passing yards on 14 completions in 33 attempts. Leeker, Williams Lift SWMO 27-17 MACOMB, III. NEBRASKA'S TOM OSBORNE After a 41-3 rout of K-State Win 41 team," said Kansas State's interim coach Lee Moon. "I still think we did some things against them.

We didn't play that bad on defense. We blitzed a lot more today than in the past. I thought that kept them off guard." Tom Rathman and Paul Miles ran for two touchdowns each to key the Coriihuskers' victory. Dale Klein kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter and added a 50-yarder in the third period to give him 12 for the season. The total tied a school record.

Klein's first field goal was set up when Mike Knox intercepted Kansas State quarterback John Welch at the Wildcats' 28 after the ball was tipped at the line of scrimmage. Barton Hundley intercepted Clayton at the Kansas State 10, but the Wildcats could not move and Welch was sacked on his own 1 on third down. Hundley picked off a Travis Turner pass early in the third quarter to stop a Nebraska drive. Kansas State moved late in the first half, but Welch was sacked for losses of 1 6 and 1 1 yards on the last two plays of the half. MANHATTAN, Kan.

(AP) Tom Osborne said he did not expect the 600th college football victory in Nebraska history to come easily despite the woeful season Kansas State is suffering through. "I thought it would be a tough game and I felt Kansas State played a good game," Osborne, the Cornhuskers-'coach, said after the Wildcats stayed with Nebraska for one quarter before falling 41-3 in a Big Eight game Saturday. The victory put Nebraska in the 600 club with Texas, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State and Alabama. "They were passing very strong," Osborne said of Kansas State, which gained 128 of its 186 total yards 0D33DGEW OdnniMIEC, Kmart Sale Price 79 per plug Less Mfr.
