South ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH Sept. 26, 1 985 5S High-Powered! Offense Will Make Aff ton's Presence Felt Soccer speed, finesse and good ball control dominate the Affton attack. Forwards Tino Hatzigeorgiou and Gus Merli and juniors Brian Taylor and Kurt Seibert are all proven goal scorers. The four combined for 34 goals last year.

Beermann said Tino Hatzigeorgiou and Taylor key the offense. McDermott, Hahn and Lubsch all have played at the varsity level before. The three have the talent to be good soccer players but Beermann said they have been lacking some consistency. Affton may be erratic on defense but the Cougars are steady and powerful on offense. A combination of "Taylor is quick and slender and he has excellent moves," said Beermann.

"If you want one guy to go on-on-one with somebody, you want him. He leads the team with six goals this year. "Tino does not have all the moves of Taylor but he has good sense on the field. He's very good on crosses and he gets in a good position to receive the ball." Midfielders Dave Pappas and Tykie Hatzigeorgiou "solidify our offense" according to Beermann. Both seniors, the pair can determine the style or flow of the game.

"We go as they go," said Beermann. "They are both good on distributing balls and they do a good job getting back to play defense. Tykie can throw the ball in very well. He has assisted on five goals this year with his ability to throw the ball in so well. He is a big offensive weapon." Beermann sa'd his team does have a problem with a lack of quality depth.

Some coaches argued that the move might have been two years too soon. But you didn't hear Phil Beermann crying. In the last four years, Beermann has guided Affton and watched the Cougars gain respect and grow into one of the top small-school powers in the area.

Just when it appeared that Affton was peaking, a Vianney, Mehlville or Oakville would knock the Cougars out of the state tournament. That will change this year. "Having two tournaments will help a lot of smaller schools around here," said Beermann. "It will free them in the district tournament and let some get a step closer to the tournament. I think that it will really help us.

We've really had some good teams over the past few years but we always got beat by a larger school along the way." Affton (4-2-1) might even bounce a few powers around this year with some talent of its own, said Beermann. An explosive offense will keep Affton in most games, said Beermann. But the defense is another question. Beermann splits time in goal with junior Rich Bossi and sophomore Steve Kidd. Kidd, a transfer from Du-Bourg, is an experienced goalie with few flaws for a sophomore.

He said the problem in the backfield is with backliners Sean McDermott, Chris Hahn, Dave Lubsch and Don Harris. McDermott, Hahn and Lubsch are all seniors and Harris is a junior. "We are very concerned with the backfield," said Beermann. "We have had some poor communication, sloppy play and a lot of miskicking lately. It has got to the point that I don't know what to expect from them.

I hope that we can work it out soon." THE TIME IS Save 3 Ways with Replacement Windows from Ferguson Exteriors!
