It doesn't bother May when people ask him about the high school's football team, as they often do. In his 20th season. May is pleased to run a baseball program at a school where football has attracted national attention. "I like it. really." he said.

"It gives us a little more exposure than we would normally have. It's nice to be associated with the program and someone like (football coach) Bob Shannon. It's a positive thing for us." When the Flyers traveled to Chicago recently to play a doubleheader, large crowds attended the games. Many of the spectators went out of curiosity. They had heard about the high school, which some publications had ranked No.

1 in the country in football last year. "There was a big crowd in Chicago, and about 20 scouts were watching," May said. "Most of the guys I talked to asked about the football team." The attention given to East St Louis football is well-deserved. The Flyers have won three successive state titles and 40 consecutive games. But the baseball team isn't being carried by the football team.

The Flyers have earned their keep on the diamond. May's team is 10-1 and is third in the Post-Dispatch large-school rankings. East St Louis' only loss was a 9-3 defeat to powerhouse Chicago Clemente. "I think we have a pretty sound club," he said. "We're getting a little bit of everything to win." The smorgasbord approach is something new for the Flyers.

Last season, East St. Louis gobbled up the Southwestern Conference title and had a 25-9 record, but the recipe for success was vastly different "We had two great players last year in Rodney Lofton and Bob De-Loach," said May. "We really counted on those two a lot If they didn't do it we were in trouble." DeLoach, a two-time Post-Dispatch All-Metro selection, went from the Flyers to professional baseball. Last summer he played at Johnson City, the Cardinals' rookie-league affiliate. This season DeLoach has moved up to the Cardinals' Class A team in Savannah, Ga.

Lofton, a slick shortstop, is playing baseball at Grambling University. While May lost DeLoach and Lofton, he returned seven players who started at times last season. The stars are missing, but the outlook is bright. "This year's team is a much better team," said May. "We have better balance.

We have different guys picking up other guys every day." The Flyers also have picked up on the wealth of baseball knowledge that the articulate May has to offer.
