Just one batter reached base and the team couldn't have been happier. "We had nothing to lose," said Darcie Mang, who is a senior at Parkway South. "We were playing the best players in the world, and it was an awesome opportunity to just be a part of this event" Mang and five other West County players were part of the all-star team that went up against the USA National Softball team Friday at ABC Park in St Ann. The games were part of the National Team's Central Park to Sydney tour across the country. Mang along with Melanie Fisher (Principia); Jessica Goggin (Ladue) and-Adie and Haley Viefhaus (Eureka High) and sister Marta Viefhaus, who attended Lafayette High, represented West County schools.

All played and contributed, but not always in wayiJhat would show up in the box score. In the first game, Fisher used all of her 6-foot-2 frame to snare a couple of errant throws to first Mang fielded both chances she received flawlessly at shortstop, including a tricky hopper. "I kept thinking 'I have to charge it, I have to Mang said of the play. The Viefhauses, who all will play at SlU-Carbondale next spring, were in both games. Adie caught a portion of each game, Haley played third in the first game and Marta was in center in the second game.

The National team won the first game 10-0 in a five-inning mercy-rule game and the second 5-0. Lori Harrigan struck out 14 of 15 in the first game, and Lisa Fernandez struck out all 21 she faced en route to her fifth consecutive perfect game. Goggin played second base in the second game. She fielded all three of her chances cleanly and caught a pop up. "It was weird fielding the ball and throwing it to first" she said, "because I was getting the best people in the world out It was quite a thrill." The team committed a combined four errors in the games, but most were on plays where the rushed throws weren't necessary.

Still the squad made an impression on the National team members. "Lori and Lisa pitched really well today," said shortstop Crystl Bustos of Canyon Country, Calif. "It would have been hard for anyone to do anything against them. The St. Louis girls hung in there at the plate, and I thought they played pretty good on Bong Yul Shin Age: 63 Employer: Anheuser-Busch His school: Moo Doo Kwan Sport: Judo "I tried to find a summer job here in St Louis and that is where I stayed," said Shin, who works at An-heuser-Bus-c and f.

Shin flash, no blood, just leverage, strength and discpline. Heavy on the discipline. "Thaf what the sport teaches young people," he said. "Discipline, respect for tradition, integrity. That is at least what I learned." Before he came to America, judo was a competitive sport for Shin.

He won the national high school tournament and reached the semifinals of national competitions. At the moment, that supreme moment, Shin knew how Mark McGwire felt when that 70th home run dropped over the fence. "It isn't about money, it's about respect," he said. "To get the ninth degree was like earning a Ph.D. I knew what the journey was about." Bong Yul Shin earns 9th-degree black belt Special to the Post-Dispatch The supreme moment came, and a board of judo experts conferred upon Bong Yul Shin his certification as a ninth-degree black belt, an honor he had worked bis life to attain.

At that moment, he looked at his life from beginning to end and marveled at the journey.
