The work is done at TWA's maintenance plant at Kansas City International Airport.

Also, all pilots for trans-Atlantic service must "go back to school," as one said Friday, for extra training in a flight simulator. Each must learn in detail about all changes made to the aircraft. Among the changes included in the 767's "Extended Range" modifications are: The plane's flight-management computer data base is expanded to include international as well as domestic routes. Additional high-frequency radios and a second automatic direction finder are installed. The capacity of the fire-fighting system in the cargo compartment is increased.

Extra cooling equipment for the on-board computers is installed. The landing gear, fuselage and wing slats are modified to accommodate heavier fuel loads. (The necessary fuel capacity was built in to the 767, but hadn't been used.) A backup AC and DC electrical generator system Is installed, and other changes are made in the craft's electrical system. Slide rafts are installed at four doors. Each raft is designed for 67 people but can accommodate 84.

Each is equipped with boarding steps, a heaving line, canopy, rescue beacon, sea anchor and survival kit. Aircraft-watchers at Lambert Field will find it easy to spot TWA's 767 "Extended Range" aircraft. Police are seeking a 23-year-old Laotian man who lives in the neighborhood where the fight took place. Detective Sgt. Colin McCoy declined to identify the three teenagers who were with Barnette, but he said they weie between the ages of 14 and 17.

They told police that they had been walking down Oregon Avenue when the quarrel began. Barnette, of the 2700 block of Armand Place, was shot with a handgun the only gun known to have been involved in the fight, McCoy said. He added that police were unaware of whether the shot had been fired in self-defense. No one else was reported injured in the fight, McCoy said. A fist-fight Friday night between four white teen-agers and two Laotian men in south St.

Louis ended when a Laotian shot one of the teen-agers in the head, killing him. Killed was James M. Barnette, 14, of south St. Louis. He was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.

In addition, the 767's engines are so powerful that the plane can take off, maintain level cruise and land using only one engine.

Also, the plane is so highly computerized that it can take off, fly and land entirely on autopilot. Two TWA pilots interviewed on Friday at Lambert Field said they believed the use of a 767-ER on nonstop flights to Europe did not pose safety problems. Both have flown other large commercial jets, but said they preferred to pilot the 767. The two pilots termed the 767 the safest, most advanced commercial plane available. A 767 with one engine shut down is preferable to a 747 with two engines shut down, they said.

Trans World began using a 767-ER in overseas service two months ago on a route linking Boston and Paris. That route is nearly 1,000 miles shorter than the 4,515 miles between St. Louis and Paris. Trans World put its first 767-ER into service without fanfare. "Most passengers greeted the on-board announcement (of service in a two-engine plane) with a yawn," said spokesman Dann M.

Oldani. Trans World hopes to use its "hub-and-spoke" route system centered at Lambert to fill the three new flights to Europe and to relieve pressure on its operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. The airline plans to route passengers from 28 cities ranging from Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego in the West to Little Rock, and in the South through Lambert Field rather than Kennedy Airport. Trans World now has 170 flights a day at Lambert Field; each is about 85 percent filled, according to Oldani.

Last month, the airline boarded a record 470,082 passengers here, or more than 15,000 a day. The airline expects to increase its flights to more than 200 a day by the height of the summer travel season, when it hopes to board as many as 20,000 passengers a day. Some of the new flights will be added to provide extra "feeder" capacity for the nonstop flights to Europe. Oldani said the 767-ER is an ideal-size plane to try to develop a demand for non-stop travel between St. Louis and Europe.

The plane seats 18 in first class; 46 in "Ambassador," or club, class; and 129 in coach. Representative fares on the new routes to Europe include: St. Louis to London: First class, $1,983 (one way); Ambassador class, $1,078 (one way); and coach, $508 to $627 (one way), depending on ticket restrictions. A restricted, round-trip ticket bought 21 days in advance costs $699 to $839. St.

Louis to Paris: First class, $2,119 (one way); Ambassador class, $1,263 (one way); and coach, with restrictions, $796 (one way). A special "Vacances" round-trip fare, with many restrictions, costs $862 to $922. A restricted, round-trip ticket bought 2 1 days in advance costs $874 to $934. St. Louis to Frankfurt: First class, $1,865 (one way); Ambassador class, $1,144 (one way); and coach, with restlctions, $988 (one way).

A special round-trip coach fare, with restrictions, costs $1,058 to a restricted, round-trip ticket bought 21 days in advance costs $565 to $784. Because of the complexity of the fare schedules and differing restrictions on tickets, airline officials urged that passengers contact the airline's reservation offices or a travel agent for assistance. The 767-ER is much less costly to fly than the 747, and flights thus can be profitable with fewer passengers. TWA probably would fly two 767s to each European destination rather than switch to the larger 747, Oldani said, adding that many passengers appreciate a choice in their schedules. "We expect our passenger loads from St.

Louis to Europe to be comparable to the load of the entire system," Oldani said. "The load here quickly will become as heavy as that at Kennedy Airport, and most of those flights are sold out weeks in advance. Within a month, I don't think you'll be able to book out of St. Louis" without some delay. The success of the St.

Louis "gateway" to Europe is important to TWA, Oldani said, because the airline wants to maintain a large share of the St. Louis market and because trans-Atlantic traffic traditionally has been far more profitable for the airline than its domestic routes. "Why not continue to grow and expand on what we've done well at?" Oldani asked. Oldani said the airline had invested about $1 million to build a new customs and immigration area directly below the gates it will use for international service here. The airline wouldn't have spent that much money if it planned to provide service for only a brief time, he said.
